Business of the Month

Creighton’s Town & Country was named Business of the Month for May by the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce. Garland and Leslie Creighton, their staff and family put to-gether a day of fundraising at the store last month to benefit Roosevelt County Little League. Through their efforts more than $8,400 was raised to replace equipment stolen from the league’s storages.

Candidates forum set for May 8

The Roosevelt County Chamber will host a candi-dates forum at 6 p.m. Thurs-day, May 8 at the Yam The-atre, 219 S. Main in Por-tales.

The forum will feature candidates in the seven open county-wide races this year. Those races include magis-trate court judge, county assessor, county clerk, coun-ty sheriff and county com-missioner in Districts 3, 4 and 5.

The forum moderator is Don Thomas, minister of the Central Christian Church. He will ask candidates ques-tions submitted by the local media and the public.

Candidates will be al-lowed two minutes each for opening and closing re-marks. They will also be asked three to five questions specific to the post they’re seeking.

Democrat and Republican candidates will be combined

on stage in each segment. County commission districts will also be combined in one segment.

“The Chamber has regu-larly held candidate forums in the past and we’re proud to sponsor the event again this primary season,” Cham-ber Executive Director Karl Terry said.

“We believe it’s important for everyone to exercise their right to vote and being informed of the issues and the candidates’ qualifica-tions is crucial.”

With the help of the Por-tales High School Media Arts class, plans are for the forum to be streamed on the web as well as broadcast live on KSEL Country 105.9. Recorded segments will also be replayed on Comcast Channel 19, Portales’ public access channel.

The event is free to the public and refreshments will be served.

The 30th annual Heritage Days is set for June 20-21 in Portales with a variety of activities planned.

“The date for this year’s celebration has been batted around quite a bit but has now been finalized for June 20-21,” said Chamber Exec-utive Director Karl Terry.

“This is our most local of events and celebrates our proud heritage here in Roo-sevelt County.”

The festival starts Friday evening with music and oth-er activities at City Park, then moves downtown Sat-urday morning with the Her-itage Days Fun Run spon-

sored by Portales MainStreet and the 10 a.m. parade, which returns to its regular route from ENMU east on Second Street to Abilene and then to City Park. The car show begins at 9 a.m. and booths open at 10:30 a.m. at City Park. The music starts shortly afterward. Ar-ea pioneers will be honored that afternoon.

For questions about Herit-age Days contact the Cham-ber at 356-8541. For more information or to register for a vendor booth or for the parade visit portales.com and click on the link in the calendar.
