President’s Comments:Spring is finally here and, if you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes – it will change! Before you know it, the Swap Meet is going to be upon us. Between now and then, there will be several work parties needed to get our equipment ready for the meet. This year we will be doing without the concession trailer, so we will be busy arranging for a substitute. The first work party will be on May 4 th to clean out the trailer and remove the items we wish to keep. We need willing volunteers for this so please help if you can. Contact Dale Stites to find out where and when. May 11th will be our first showing of cars at the Mission Mill. This is an obligation that comes with our being able to rent space at the facility for our monthly meetings so any and all participation will be appreciated. Also, by the time you have read this, those of you who were lucky enough to go on the Hood River Blossom Tour lead by Lee Hardy should have some interesting stories to tell us. So, things, along with the weather, are heating up. Hopefully, this will be a good summer for all of us. Take care and see you at the next meeting. Ray Ramsay

Others in attendance were: Beauford Averette, Jeff Norwood, Dale Stites, Fred Lissner, Gary LeMaster, Jim and Susan Brennan (Hosts). The Board waived notice of time, place and purpose of the meeting. The minutes of the April General meeting were dispensed with. The Treasurer reported that the books were up to date and in proper order. Model A Ford Problems Discussed: Jim Brennan has been working on his Model A brakes. He had bonded lining put on all his shoes and the shoes arched to his drums by Otts Friction. The cost was very reasonable. There was some discussion of the Brake Floater Kit. Committee Reports: TOURS: Mission Mill would like 6-8 cars at their Sheep to Shawl event May 11, from 10 -4 pm. June 15 is the day we set up for the swap meet which is June 16. June 23 is the McMinnville Lions Club Fly-in Drive-in Pancake breakfast. For more details, see the Northwest Car Events Calendar. The General Meeting will be held Thursday July 4th at the picnic with the Model T Club and the Horseless Carriage Club. The picnic is held in the park behind Fire Station #1 on Cordon Road SE. The Silver Falls Days are July 13 and 14. They would like cars to be displayed from 10 – 4 pm. The tour with the Model T club to the Molalla Small Scale Train facility in scheduled for Sunday, August 11. It is only open on Sunday. Sunshine: No report. The Board authorized an expenditure of $60.00 for made in Oregon items as our donation to the raffle they will hold at the meet. Susan Brennan will make the purchases. They will be delivered by those attending the meet. Newsletter: Blair Wasson is the editor for the May issue of the Connecting Rod. We still need an editor for the September issue. Historian: No Report. Swap Meet: We will be having a spring work party on May 4 at 10:00 am to take items out of the Concession Trailer before we attempt to sell it. It is parked at Bob Burton's in Dallas. The bun warmer will go, tables and the transformer will be removed. We may purchase new items for the concession tent before the swap meet. One item being a three compartment chaffing dish. Check with Dale Stites for details (503) 949-6370. We may try to sell the Concession Trailer at the Swap Meet. We should have the insurance bill from Hagerty Insurance for the Swap Meet next week. Old Business: Beauford Averette and Susan Brennan will meet with David Simpson in April to get help on how to keep our web site updated with our latest newsletters and any other changes we may want to make. There was inadequate participation in the Road Cleanup last month. For the next cleanup we will have a sign-up sheet so that those who are going to participate can be reminded. New Business: The Board approved a payment of actual expenses up to $200.00 for anyone setting up an overnight tour. Spending a day or so can require a motel room, gas and meals. Expenditures for longer tours will be determined on a case by case basis. The October general meeting will be held at the Northwest Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum in Brooks. The Mission Mill contract has been signed. The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Beauford Averette, Secretary

THE JOYS OF THE COMPUTER AGE

Gary LeMaster has been assembling the Connecting Rod for some time. He, like the rest of us, is finding it hard to communicate with other computers. Some use Windows XP, Windows 7, the new Windows 8 or are Mac's. For this reason he is considering ending his involvement in this endeavor at the end of the year. That means someone with a newer computer and more up-to-date computer skills needs to step up and take over this task!!! Ask yourself, “Am I The One?”

Coast Guard Station – Cape Disappointment TourApril 6-7, 20-13

Day 1

The Modern Iron Tour commenced at 8:00 am, Saturday, April 6 th at Rite Aid parking lot at River Road and Lockhaven. An extensive tour book was handed out to all participants by our fearless leaders, Gary and Diane LeMaster. Also, assembled at the parking lot were the Averette’s, the Ramsays’ and the Zielinskie’s. The tour got off to a timely start and proceeded up I-5, turned onto I-405, continued through Portland, and then West on Highway 30. The first stop was at 9:30 am for breakfast at the Kozy Korner Restaurant in St. Helen’s where we were joined by Charlie Schmidt. The restaurant lived up to its name and is evidentially a popular place for Saturday morning breakfast with the family. After everyone had eaten their fill and those craving coffee had been satisfied, we proceeded up the road at about 10:30 am. We arrived in Astoria, crossed the Astoria Bridge, and traveled some very Model A-ish roads to the Coast Guard Station at Cape Disappointment. We arrived about 1:00 pm and were given a very nice tour which included not only the station and its lighthouse, but some of their training videos and the boat dock. This station is the only one in the U.S. where Coast Guard men and women can train to handle boats in extreme weather where there is sufficient experience on board to get the trainees out of whatever trouble they might get in to. We were shown one training video where the helmsman misjudged a 16 foot wave which cause the boat to flip completely before righting itself. And, the wave height has been known to get up to 60 feet! The Columbia River Bar is conceded to be the most dangerous bar in the world and whatever we are paying the men and women of the Coast Guard – it isn’t enough. At the conclusion of the tour we motored into Long Beach, Washington where we took shelter at the Super 8 for the evening. After “freshening up” we met in our Leaders’ room for snacks and a review of the day. Each person was asked what their favorite part of the tour was and when dinner time came around, we headed for the Lost Roo. It was March Madness night so we watched basketball while we ate. Again, the restaurant was packed, the food was good, and basketball was EVERYWHERE. After dinner we went back to the hotel and retired, having had a great first day thanks to our Leaders and their superb planning.

Day 2

The day started out with a continental breakfast at the Hotel. We assembled at 8:45 am for the drive back to Astoria for a tour of the Columbia River Maritime Museum. We arrived at the museum at 9:30 where our tour guide was ready to show us around the displays. We learned about bar pilots, their training and the knowledge they must know about the bar to safely guide ships into the Columbia River. A movie showed us how the pilots boarded the ships over the years and we viewed the equipment used. There were scale models of ships from the early days that crossed the bar and traveled up and down the west coast. A full size display showed a Coast Guard rescue of a person in the ocean with a thirty-six foot boat breaching a sixteen plus high wave. For the brave soles on this trip (5 of 9), there was a 3-D movie on Sharks. As it turned out, this informational movie discussed the different sharks, their habitat, characteristics, and whether they were endangered or not. The only thing coming at us from the screen were the jelly-fish. The others continued touring the museum and visited the bookstore. Our tour leaders arranged for a fabulous meal at the Silver Salmon where Ray had the best oyster stew he has had in some time. After our lunch each participant found their own way home. Some went down the coast and others went back the way we came. Everyone had a great time. Thanks Gary and Diane for a very pleasant tour.
