Maximizing Interaction in the TEFL Classroom

Seating arrangements in the TEFL Classroom

Maximizing interaction in the TEFL classroom involves both actions and the

decisions of the teacher.

The actions are those things that are done in the TEFL classroom, such as rearranging the chairs and the desks. The decisions relate to

how and when these actions are implemented.

Seating arrangements and various classroom options allow students to interact with different people in the class as well as

allowing a range of different situations to be recreated within the classroom.

The horseshoe shape or circle arrangement is deemed to be more effective for TEFL classes.

Encourage a friendly, relaxed learning environment in the TEFL classroom.

If there’s a trusting, positive rapport amongst learners and teachers, then there is a much better chance of students wanting to take

risks.

Oral work within the TEFL classroom: respect the learner’s level of English and use gestures to replace unnecessary teacher talk.

Written work within the TEFL classroom: Keep it simple and have words, diagrams and

labeled pictures on display in the TEFL classroom.
