Presentation to NADB
Nick Elcock

The Business Need
• Patient Safety– To reduce duplicate records (resulting in partial clinical records)– To improve demographic data quality and reduce clerical errors.
• To support Trust Merger– To ensure that each patient has only one identity in the newly
formed Trusts– To allow new information systems to be implemented across the
whole Trust
• To support the implementation of the Welsh Clinical Portal– A single source of patient identity – Pointers to the location of clinical information

Why Not Use the WDS?
• WDS only holds demographic data and not the references to link to episodes of care.
• WDS is only populated with patients registered at Welsh GPs
• WDS is only updated by GPs
