1. Foundation and History

The first attempt for the foundation of our department was made by Suphi Paşa, Minister

of Commerce, to relieve trade from dominance of foreigners, to provide necessary trade

knowledge for local traders and to train experts and on 16 January 1883 the department was

established with the name of “Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Alisi” by Tahir Paşa, Minister of

Education. The department, which was abolished in 1893 on unknown grounds, was re-

established in 1894 in Beyazit. Both theoretical and practical knowledge was being provided

which at those times enhanced the value of our department and in 1915 specialization majors

were established for the first time. In 1923-1924 academic year it continued to educate under

Ministry of Economy and henceforth it became the first institution where female and male

students are educated together in Turkey. In 1924 it was renamed as “Yüksek İktisat ve

Ticaret Mektebi” under Ministry of Education. Although it was a vocational school, where

only graduates of Commercial High Schools could attend, high school graduates were started

to be accepted after 1927. In 1959 it took the name of “İktisadi ve Ticari İlimler Akademisi”

with the enforcement of Academy Law and specialization majors are transformed to Finance-

Accounting, Economic Business Administration, International Trade and Tourism and length

of education was prolonged to four years from three years. Evening courses are opened and

some changes were made on curriculum with the decision of Inter-Academic Board in 1967.

Then majors are separated as Economics-Finance and Business Administration-Accounting.

“İstanbul İktisadi ve Ticari İlimler Akademisi”, which became an incorporated annexed

budget institutions in 1969, was supplemented with three institutions that are namely

Accounting Institute, Business Sciences Institute and Turkish Economics Institute in 1972-

1974 academic years. All of the faculties that were established with the transformation of

Galatasaray Business Vocational School to Business Administration Faculty and Aksaray

Vocational Commerce High School and Beyazit Finance-Accounting Vocational High School

to Commercial Sciences Faculty which were within the structure of Academy that opened

Economic, Business Administration and Political Sciences in 1977-1978 academic year were

merged to Marmara University Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculty depending on

Law no.41 that came into force in July 1982. As of March 23, 2012 Faculty of Economics and

Administrative Sciences was closed. Instead, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of

Economics and Faculty of Political Science were established.

2. General Information

Business Administration Department aims to provide students with the ability to cope

with the competitive and rapidly changing global environment that will contribute to scientific

research and overall society besides academic education. The mission of our department is

educate competent individuals and to pertain continual improvement.

In accordance with their career plans, interests and capabilities at the end

of 4th

year, students, who take basic business administration courses in the

first two years of undergraduate program, choose and graduate with a BA

on one of the following majors:

- Management – Organization,

- Production Management and Marketing

- Accounting – Finance

- Decision Sciences

Some of the characteristics and skills that a person graduated from a business

administration department should have can be listed as:

Problem solving

Creativity

Team work

Communication skills

Innovativeness

Flexibility

Global Perspective

Ability to make presentations

Ability to conduct research

Computer skills

Courses are lectured in English in Business Administration Department except for some

courses (Turkish, Principles of Ataturk and History of Turkish Republic, Law, etc.). Students

need to take English Proficiency Exam as our education language is English. Those who

could not succeed in the exam have to attend Preparation Class.

Our department is the one that accepts and enrolls highest number of students through

Erasmus program within Marmara University. It is aimed to achieve exchange of international

knowledge and culture with high level of participation to Exchange programs. International

Week that is arranged with universities in foreign countries and Career Days that are

organized in co-operation with leading companies in Turkey plan to strengthen the students’

connection with outer world.

Education and research activities are being conducted with 10 Professors, 13 Associate

Professors, 9 Assistant Professors, 5 Teaching Assistants, 5 Research Assistants and part-time

academic staff from related sectors as of 2012.

There are two organizations that contribute to self development of students by arranging

various activities, namely “Marmara Community” and “Management Club” affiliated to our

Department.

In 2012-2013 academic year, highest and lowest scores in terms of TM-1 are respectively

451.590 and 416.250 for our department which is the one that accepts students with the

highest scores among departments of Economics and Administrative Sciences. This year 98

students are enrolled to our Department.

Specific Admission Requirements

Admissions are accepted depending on "YGS and LYS" Turkish- Mathematics grade.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and

Informal)

Students may be exempt from some cources in accordance with the related regulatory

framework.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students enroll to 9 courses in the first year, 7 courses in the second year and 6 courses in

third and fourth year in both fall and spring semesters. There is no requirement for any thesis

or compulsory internship.
