Beware of Son Screen

Mark 3:20-35

Larry Cline – Hardin Valley Church of Christ – 9/21/2014

Two Attacks:

1. His own family says He is crazy.

“Take charge” is a word Mark uses 7 times in his gospel to refer to someone being arrested.

Jesus’ prophecy is coming true. (Matthew 10:36)

2. The scribes say, He is possessed by Beelzebub.

“Historically” He is tough to explain.

You would think His family and the spiritual leaders would have been the very groups to recognize Jesus.

Rabbinic literature records Jesus as practicing sorcery… He wouldn’t put up with that!

Mark 3:23-30

23And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, "How can Satan cast

out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against

itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26If Satan has

risen up against himself and is divided,

he cannot stand, but he is finished! 27But no one can enter

the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.

28Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men,

and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"-- 30because they

were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."

Mark is reminding us that there is a war going on!

the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has

sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this

purpose, to destroy the works of the

devil. (I John 3:8)

Notice a couple of implications:

There is unity in the kingdom of evil.

No one can cast out demons unless he is stronger than their prince.

Hebrews 2:14-1514Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He

Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

15and might free those who through fear of death were subject to

slavery all their lives.

There is a war going on…You & I are at STAKE!

28"Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and

whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has

forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"–

(Mark 3:28-19)

The “Question” is not the

EXISTANCE of eternal sin

The “Question” is the IDENTITY of it.

Because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Imperfect tense It’s what they always

said…“He works for the devil”

"But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God,

then the kingdom of God has come upon you."

(Matthew 12:28)

You were meant to learn something!

When they saw Jesus drive out demons they should have known:

1. Who He was.

2. What side He was on.

They had Son Screen

Application:

1. Be Watchful because satan is real.

What does Jesus think?

2. Judgment is Certain!

Why would there be an eternal sin if judgment wasn’t real?

You can’t remain neutral!

3. Be Joyfuland know victory is

near!

Once D-day was established…THE DAY was just around the corner.

4. Be Faithful…Jesus is Lord!

When you say Jesus is Lord & let Him govern your life…

to some you are the fanatic!

Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the

Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say,

"Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

(I Corinthians 12:3)
