MTT Exam Competency 004

Competency 004

The Master Technology Teacher knows and applies basic strategies and techniques for using digital video technology.

The Master Technology Teacher:

Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts relating to video technology (e.g., analog, digital) and understands differences and similarities between linear and nonlinear editing.

Analog

Analog: An electrical signal that continuously varies in strength as related to some form of input.

Analog Recording: A means of recording audio or video whereby the recorded signal is a physical representation of the waveform of the original signal.

Digital

Digital Recording: A method of recording in which samples of the original analog signal are encoded on tape or disk as binary information for storage or processing. The signal can then be copied repeatedly with no degradation. http://www.filmland.com/glossary/Dictionary.html

Digital: A reference to a system whereby a continuously variable analog signal is reduced and encoded into discrete binary bits that establish a mathematical model of an original signal or other information. http://www.filmland.com/glossary/Dictionary.html

Non-Linear and Linear Editing

Non-linear editing on digital video

Non destructive processEasier to use, new

Linear editing on video tape

Destructive processOlder method of cut and

paste.

The Master Technology Teacher:

Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts of video filming(e.g., composition, ratio of image to frame, position in frame, line of gaze, pans/tilts, movement, perspective).

Composition- arrangement of elements in a frame

Aspect ratio- width by height ex. 4:3, 16:9

Pans- right to left or left to right movement

Tilts- up and down movement

Perspective- camera view

The Master Technology Teacher:

Knows a variety of basic video techniques(e.g., zoom, focus, filters) and lighting techniques(e.g., key fill, backlight)and how to use incident/reflected light, color, temperatures and filters.

The Master Technology Teacher:

Demonstrates knowledge of compression schemes for a variety of file types (e.g., photographs, animation, audio, video, graphics) and knows compression strategies, programs, and techniques to conserve memory and retain image integrity when digitally capturing files.

Compression Schemes

Lossy compression means compressed file has less data than original file.

Lossless compression means none of the information is lost.

Compression

Photographs- are compressed into jpeg files

Animation - into Gif files

Sound- Mp3 files

Video graphics

The Master Technology Teacher:

Knows how to use techniques for capturing and editing audio components during the video production process.

The Master Technology Teacher:

Demonstrates knowledge of techniques used in postproduction(e.g./ editing and creating control and /or time coded tracks; creating transitions, captions and titles; applying 2 –D and 3-D animation effects).

Non-Linear Editing

Modern editing method which involves being able to access any frame in a digital video clip with the same ease as any other

Linear Video Editing

Process of selecting, arranging and modifying the images and sound recorded on videotape. Cutting of the negatives made it a destructive process

Analog Recording

A means of recording audio or video whereby the recorded signal is a physical representation of the waveform of the original signal

Digital

A reference to a system whereby a continuously variable analog signal is reduced and encoded into discrete binary bits that establish a mathematical model of an original signal or other information

Digital Recording

A method of recording in which samples of the original analog signal are encoded on tape or disk as a binary information for storage or processing. The signal can then be copied

repeatedly with no degradation.

Composition

Visual make-up of a video picture, including such variables as balance, framing, field of view and texture all aesthetic considerations. Combined qualities form an image that’s pleasing to view.

Pan

Horizontal camera pivot, right to left or left to right, from a stationary position

Tilt

Vertical camcorder rotation(up and down) from a single axis, as on a tripod

Zoom

An optical effect in which the image rapidly grows larger or smaller as though the camera is moving closer or away from its subject

Filter

Any device placed on a lens or light source that alters the quality of the passing light

Backlight

A light which is generally mounted behind a subject to light the subject’s hair and shoulders without illuminating a subject’s front.

Key Light

The main light on a subject

Fill Light

May be used to reduce the contrast of a scene and provide some illumination for the areas of the image that are in shadow

Aspect Ratio

The proportion of picture width to height

2D Animation

Everything happens on a 2 dimensional platform. Pictures are flat, without depth and offer only one perspective

3D animation

Everything happens on a 3 dimensional platform. Pictures have depth and offer multiple perspectives just like in real life and have soft subtle shadows casted on the objects and characters within.

Lossy Compression

Compressed file has less data in it than the original file

MPEG-1

Standard for the compression of moving pictures and audio

MPEG-2

Standard on which digital television set top boxes and dvd compression is based

MPEG-4

Standard for multimedia and web compression

Omnidirectional

An omnidirectional (or nondirectional) microphone's response is generally considered to be a perfect sphere in three dimensions

Unidirectional

A unidirectional microphone is sensitive to sounds from only one direction

Shotgun

“Shotgun” microphones are the most highly directional

Lavalier

A lavalier microphone is made for hands-free operation
