It’s hard to believe, but we have almost made it through another Midwest winter! With high hopes that spring is right around the corner, we have created a full calendar of events for this coming season and beyond. Right now the Club is being put back together from the annual cleaning and refreshing and will be ready for another year of activity for all families to enjoy starting March 1st.
As mentioned in previous articles, 2017 will continue to be a year of growth for The Country Club of Peoria. Goals for membership development, while lofty, are very attainable if we continue to get the buy-in and support of all the membership. With each new family we welcome into our great Club, we strengthen the foundation of what makes CCP one of the best country clubs in the region – engaged membership and passionate staff supporting the community of members. We are always eager to show off all the Club has to offer and ask you to continue to bring guests to our fine facilities and encourage them to join.
Another area of focus in 2017 is to enhance committee participation. Emails have gone out asking for committee volunteers and we are still collecting names. As a member-owned Club, committee participation is an important part of our success and agenda-setting. Our standing committees have a wide scope of responsibilities, but most of
all, they are a conduit for members to share their ideas on how to improve the Club. Discussions between staff and members at these meetings are key to sharing opinions and addressing issues that are then passed onto the Board for resolution. I encourage all members to consider volunteering for at least one committee while a member of the Club.
Behind the scenes the food and beverage staff have been working hard to plan all of the events and menus for 2017. This will mark the first full year that Chef Stephen is on staff to implement his ideas and culinary visions for all to enjoy. One area the membership has asked the staff to improve is the service and offerings at the pool on a daily basis. While the pool provides a fun and relaxing environment, because of our facilities layout, the F&B services have not always been up to expectations of the membership. We are therefore looking into ways to enhance all service offerings at the pool to include: expanding our shuttle service up and down the hill for members; improving F&B service staffing for lunch, dinner and cocktail orders; and revamping the poolside menu to provide a more

efficient and high-quality product. While we are trying our best to improve in these areas, we do ask for patience and assistance in refining the experience. And please remember to return towels prior to leaving the pool area! The attrition of towels has been growing each year and as they go
missing, it puts a big strain on the staff to launder towels during busy times.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the membership for the support of our staff in their continuing education efforts. This time of year many hours are dedicated to improving our knowledge of the industry in order for us to provide the best leadership to the Club. Our continued professional development would not be possible without
the commitment of the Board and the membership as a whole. So from all of us, to all of you, a big THANK YOU!
As we welcome in another season, thank you all for being loyal members to your Club. We look forward to providing excellent experiences with each visit and to building our community in 2017!

TASTY NOTES FROM CHEF STEPHEN
BY CHEF STEPHEN HURD Welcome Back Members! I am excited to be starting my second season here at CCP! My culinary team and I have been working hard in the offseason creating new menus and events that showcase our talents and provide you with new ways to enjoy the Club. We have filled the 2017 calendar with many new, fun-filled events while keeping in mind your favorite traditional ones.
We start the season off with an introduction to Old World Wines. This is a wine-tasting event that will teach the ABC’s of European wines. I encourage anyone who likes wine to attend regardless of your knowledge level. Also, in March we will be featuring Friday night Fish Frys with fresh Walleye, Perch and Cod.
The St. Patrick’s Day buffet on March 17th will include the classic corned beef and cabbage along with many other great Irish dishes. And the Carpet Classic, CCP’s indoor golf tournament on March 18th, will allow you to enjoy a round of mini-golf throughout the clubhouse along with a great food
stations to complement. If you are a basketball fan, join us in the New Bar for a March Madness happy hour including wings and beer specials.
This year we are also starting a series of themed buffets starting with a Taste of Italy on March 8th. This will be followed by a Taste of the Orient on March 22nd and the ever popular Taste of the Southwest on April 5th.
Easter is in April this year and we have a spectacular buffet planned featuring fresh seafood, chef-made omelets, carving stations and delicious desserts. April will also include our Masters Wine Dinner on April 8th featuring new food and wine parings to stimulate and test your pallet. Last but not least, we will be celebrating Administrative Professionals Day with a fantastic lunch buffet featuring soups and fresh salads on April 26th.
MEMBERSHIP GROWTH COMMITTEE PARTICIPATION
The Board has set the goal of growing the Club to 500 members (up from the current number of 472) in 2017.
Initiation fees will remain at $2,000 until the Club reaches the 500 member goal.
Once this goal is met, the initiation fees will increase until we reach another pre-determined membership level.
House committee – deals with food & beverage area, event planning/idea generation
Pool committee – addresses all pool–related issues and programming
Golf committee – advises on any issues that arise, addresses policy matters
Tennis committee – participates actively in tennis events, deals with any tennis–related issues
Membership committee – helps recruit new members, generates ideas for marketing/branding and membership drives

FROM THE GOLF SHOP
BY SCOTT BROWNFIELD Let the March Madness begin!! The golf shop will have regular shop hours beginning Tuesday, March 7th. Hopefully, the weather allows us to open the course sooner than later! The offseason has been a busy one including: hiring new assistant golf professionals, attending the PGA Merchandise Show, participating in the National Teaching and Coaching Summit, meeting with Charity Golf Outings, and finally, preparing the golf shop for opening day.
Andrew Braun will be joining the Golf Professional Team in 2017. Andrew comes to us from Oakwood Country Club where he was the 1st Assistant the last four years. Andrew is originally from Washington, IL so he is very familiar with Central Illinois and The Country Club of Peoria. Andrew joined me in Orlando for the Merchandise Show and attended his Level 3 PGA seminars. We look forward to having Andrew join the team! We have narrowed the 2nd Assistant position down to two candidates and will hopefully have that individual in place by March 15th.
Upcoming events this month include the popular Carpet Classic which will take place on Friday, March 10th at the main clubhouse. Up the elevator and down the stairs, balls will be bouncing and drinks will be flowing. If you haven’t joined us in the past, come out and battle the 9-hole miniature golf course set up throughout the clubhouse. Last year we had over 100 players test their skills on the course, we expect more in 2017!
Once again The Country Club of Peoria will be offering the PGA Junior League. Watch for emails this month with sign-up instructions and the 2017 schedule. This league is a great way to get your children playing golf. The team format engages participants who play with friends and receive coaching from our PGA Professionals. The program welcomes players of all abilities.
And check out the golf events on this page and mark your calendars. Don’t forget to register for the events, tournaments or league play with the pro shop at 309-685-1212.

BY ANDY MORRIS It is hard to believe that we are already looking at the return of spring. The winter went by quickly, and now we enter into another golf season. Honestly, the “cabin fever” usually sets in about now, so it is good to get back out on the course on a daily basis. Spring golf will soon begin!
Our first priority is to get the course cleaned up after the winter season. Before we can send out the mowers, the course needs to be cleared of debris. You would be surprised at how much “stuff” there is to pick up after the off season. Once our soil temperatures rise and the grass breaks dormancy, we can begin to mow.
Our crew is relatively small as we begin the season and we try to have full staff by Memorial Day. We are very fortunate that our core crew members return annually, so we can hit the ground running with an experienced team.
It makes a huge difference in getting things done efficiently and correctly as we prepare the course for the season. We will hire a few new team members to round out this season’s staff, as we always lose a couple crew members to college or career changes.
Spring is a busy time for us with all the agronomic responsibilities that need to be completed. The spring agronomics help prepare the course to meet the challenges of the summer stress period. We will be aerating greens, tees and fairways around the first of May. Look for more information on that as we get closer. With staff returning, spring cleanup, and all the required agronomic responsibilities, there is a definite buzz in the Golf Maintenance Department this time of year!
We also turn our attention to the clubhouse areas in the spring. Getting
tennis courts cleaned up and ready for play along with lawns and flower bed maintenance are tasks handled by Annette Hollaway and Roger Helton. They do a great job of making the club look good and preparing the colorful flower beds to be enjoyed throughout the season. If you see Annette or Roger working around the clubhouse, please help us in thanking them for their efforts.
As you can see, spring gets the ball rolling in our department (no pun intended!), so get out the clubs, dust them off and get ready for another season of golf. It is just around the corner!
See You on the Course!
FROM TEE TO GREEN
BY MICHAEL BUHS
The Benefits of Flexibility Developing flexibility is an important goal of any training program or fitness regime. When you increase your flexibility, you reduce awkward and inefficient movements because joints can move more freely and this in turn may decrease your likelihood of injury. Improving flexibility also helps enhance your ability to perform various movement skills from the everyday (picking up a bag of groceries off the floor) to the movements required in your favorite activities (serving a tennis ball).
Interestingly, while great athletes may have above-average flexibility, this may not be why they are successful. The ability to move effectively depends
on strength with coordination, and being flexible can enhance this ability in certain situations.
The goal of flexibility training is to build strength combined with flexibility so that you better control your movements. Flexibility is also an important factor in preventing injury. Among the most common problems seen in individuals with poor flexibility is lower back pain potentially resulting from tight quadriceps and back muscles (and possibly a corresponding weakness in the abdominal muscles and hamstrings). A lack of flexibility may increase the incidence of muscle tears resulting from tight muscles on one or both sides of a joint.
Because of these important benefits, stretching should be incorporated into
your fitness activities, workouts or training sessions. I recommend a warm-up and then a second, designated stretching period during your workout (either within or at the end). Because flexibility plays such a critical role in improving movement performance and reducing the opportunity for injury, it should be something you focus on and make time for during the day.
If you are interested in learning more about building a fitness regime that incorporates exercises to increase your flexibility, stop by the fitness center or contact me directly at 309-645-1647.
