An Extended Centre

These obvious but remarkably resis-tant q uestions s tem from a convic-tion t hat a rchitecture is not consti-tuted of buildings or sites but arises from the studied relationship of the two and form an awareness that site is r eceived a s an a rchitectural construct, even if unconciously.

Using a community centre as a point of departure, this project seeks to d evelop a n architecture that recognizes the potential condition of the institution as both an extension of the city and as a bounded entity that possesses a unique identity.

The s ite is l ocated o n the western edge o f Riverdale Park West at the point where Carlton Street ends just south of R iverdale Farm. N otably

west b y the abrupt t ermina-tion of row houses along

Carlton Street and to the east by a 20 m eter d rop to t he e dge o f Bayview A venue. A n existing staircase and pathway on the site connects to a p edestrian b ridge that crosses the Don Valley Park-way providing access to the Don Valley trail system below and to

the Riverdale P ark on t he east side of the valley.

A development o f new proposals for the Dufferin Mall site, looking also at its surrounding neighborhood, Dufferin Grove. Toronto will serve as the super-studio’s testing ground f or i deas about how a rchitecture, l andscape architecture and urban design togeth-er can conspire to r eformulate an already compelling site within the city. Focusing on a design for the refevel-opment of the Dufferin Mall/Duffering grove.

Initially the mall is broken into its functional and spatial componentswith respect to the ideology of the mall

The idea of the design isto bring all the elements in a vertical direction

Once the program is re-stacked in a manner that main circulation is below, the anchor stores above andthe smaller retailers above all

The idea is to stack more program on top, leaving no additionalfootprint to the site

The massing is readjusted in hierarchies in the form of a pyramid

Once this massing is obtained, the surface area is reduced and more program and built area is raised upward

Form and Texture

The client asked to provide a series of line drawings in order to show where the cuts of t he s tone w ould lie. The shape was that of a seashell.

A series of renderings would show the texture of stone the ornament would be carved i nto as w ell as a f ew creative scenarios where the shell would be used.
