-Vegetables: carrots, cucumbers and lettuce
-Fruits: apples, bananas and oranges
-Dairy products: milk, yogurt and cheese
-Meats: a balance of red meat, chicken and fish
-Eggs and beans
-Drinks: water and fresh juices
In addition, honey and dates are good for immunity.
We don't recommend foods with:
high sugar like chocolate, donuts and cakes
chips
coffee and energy drinks
fizzy drinks like cola
Healthy foods in combination with enough sleep and
exercise are important for physical and mental health!

Behavior and Logical Consequences
Sometimes we are not happy with the choices our children make. This may be related to grades, tantrums, hitting a
sibling, watching too much TV, ignoring us for their iPad (phone) or other behaviors we find unacceptable.
But, the first changes may have to come NOT from the child, but FROM THE ADULT.
#1 Don't React
Our first move could be to determine what we’ve been doing wrong. "One mistake most parents make is responding to
the misbehavior, since negative attention is better than none at all," explained Ed Christophersen, Ph.D., clinical child
psychologist at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Christophersen suggests telling
your child about a new rule during a calm moment.
#2: Stay Positive
Expecting kids to be bad is a self-fulfilling prophecy. "When you label your child, make sure it's positive so he has
something to live up to," she told me. Statements sound like, “I like the way you are enjoying dinner with us rather
than texting your friends” or “I like that today you did not hit your brother; it is important that we are kind to each other.”
#3: Walk the Walk
Next, decide to change your own bad behavior, since Jayne Bellando, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist at Arkansas
Children's Hospital, in Little Rock, pointed out that we sometimes model the very thing we want to stop in our kids.
For example, instead of imploring your kids to get a move on, say calmly, "Just reminding you that we have to leave in
five minutes or you won't make it on time." Reflect on whether you whine, complain, make excuses, blame others or
react emotionally—Your kids are learning how to respond by watching and imitating you.
#4: Validate Before Disciplining
Gary M. Unruh, author of Unleashing the Power of Parental Love, states, "Kids usually act out for a reason. That's why
you should point out the feelings that caused your child to misbehave, and then give a fair consequence. This will help
them feel accepted and understood, even as they are being disciplined.” Consequences for actions are a part of the
learning.
‘Feelings first, discipline second’ is the best behavior trick ever. The one drawback: Its success is dependent on having
the patience to implement it. Statements like, “I understand your were mad because he hit you, but you have a
5-minute timeout to think about whether hitting is the right choice. Children at kindergarten are able to understand
choice and consequence.
#5: Be Consistent
Our ability to handle our kids' outbursts depends on our mood. But there's no room for variability. "You need to be
consistent, make your expectations clear, and avoid your own outbursts," asserted Bertie Bregman, M.D., chief of
family medicine service at New York- Presbyterian Hospital, in New York City.
These are just a few of the ways that teachers and parents can work better with kids based on outstanding research
and clinical practice. The most important is that we walk the walk and that we are consistent. Students watch us as
educators and you, as parents. We are their role models.
My grandmother always said, “Yelling at a child is like pressing your horn to get the car moving; it doesn’t work but it
makes a lot of noise.” She knew that her own responses determined how any situation went.
- Dr. Sue
Perfect Attendance
We know at MIS that attendance matters.
All research shows that students who attend
do better in their studies. The following
students had perfect attendance for the
entire first semester! They did not arrive
tardy to a single class, miss one hour or
miss one day of school in the first 93 days.
Thank you to them for their hard work and
diligence as students! This is a great step
toward lifelong success!
