The Good Old Days
“It used to be a whole lot easier. If
I needed a telephone, I called the
telephone company and they
installed it. If it stopped working, I
called them and they fixed it.”
MANWEILER TELECOM CONSULTING, LLC
In 1964• Long distance calls cost $.60 to $1.00 per minute. ($3.25
to 5.43 in today’s dollars).
• Mobile telephone service was limited to 12 simultaneous calls in any city and for use in vehicles due to the weight of the equipment.
• Coded ringing and 8 party service was the norm for rural areas.
• Fax capacity did not exist.
• Data communications consisted of telegraph service.
• Most calls sounded like there really were tin cans and string involved.
• The very beginnings of the Internet was still 5 years away

• PHASE II– Infrastructure Inventory– Business Models
• PHASE III– Technology Plan Development– Financing Alternatives– Final Report
MANWEILER TELECOM CONSULTING, LLC
• Infrastructure is not a “Silver Bullet”– Applications and uses are the goal– “Build it and they will use it” doesn’t
always work– Can be a “double-edged sword” for
rural communities– Success dependent upon end-user
demand
• Takes 10 times longer than anyone anticipates
