Your class & You
1. In your classrooms…. Do you normally use the same amount of time for each skill (W,R,S,L)? Why?
2. Why do learners not want to write?
3. What are the benefits of writing in English for the learner?

In your classrooms….
Do you normally use the same amount of time for each skill (W,R,S,L)?
Why?Nebrija 25/06/20156
What are we doing when we’re writing? We are producing language: We have to
combine words together into a comprehensible message
(something you are not obliged to do when merely listening / reading).
WRITING is as important as any other skill
7 Nebrija 25/06/2015
Output / Production forces the learner into syntactic processing. (Coonan, 2006; 2008)

What are the benefits of writing in English for the learner?
Nebrija 25/06/201512
It gives them experience
They can learn from each other
(+ peer correction)
Writing recycles grammar, enriches vocabulary and expands content
13 Nebrija 25/06/2015
What’s more….The teacher
Can monitor efficiently during the tasks.
Can take notes of areas that require more work and plan micro-teaching based on the students’
mistakes.
At the end of the task there is a product which can be used for further work.

Our objective today
Developing activities to ensure writing can be meaningful
Did we achieve this?
Nebrija 25/06/2015
56 Nebrija 25/06/2015
Final thoughts….
•SS will learn what they’re ready to learn
•We don’t know that the students have learned until they produce something.
Exploit opportunities for using the language!!!!
•It’s not always what you teach but how you teach it
