Goodbye to the monologue

Monologue ConversationInterruption Interaction“me, me, me” “you” and “us”

• You draw in people who are already interested in what you do.

• They will easily warm to you.• Minimal risk to them.• Conversation is three-way.• Meet them where they are – join

their conversation.

Be interesting

Take a stand• Be a “champion” for your

audience.• Be controversial if necessary.• Change your customers’ world for

the better.

Show your personality• Deadly serious or fabulously fun.• Relentlessly challenging or

supremely supportive.• What’s your style?• Don’t be half-hearted.

Be generous and useful• Great for your reputation.• Keeps people coming back.• Gives them something to

recommend you for.• Don’t give away the crown jewels!

Give them an experience• Something to talk about.• Something to share.• Keep them engaged.• People don’t buy rationally – all

decisions have an emotional element.

Be interested…• Solve problems.• Get feedback and new ideas.• It’s not all about you.

What’s your position?• Stick your neck out• What are you NOT?• Have a niche specialism• Come at something from a different angle• Have a distinctive tone of voice• Do the unexpected• It has to be “talkable”

What’s the trick?• Social means transparency and ability to

communicate, respond and share quickly.• Don’t write off tradition – just make it

interactive not interruptive.• Squeeze out as much value as possible…

The rules…• Understand your audience – where are they?

– meet them there.• Decide your stance and style – and be

consistent.• Choose the right combination of tools to

attract your audience.

Thank you
