Law of Conservation of Mass states: In a chemical reaction matter can neither be created

nor destroyed!In other words…The mass before a chemical reaction equals the mass after the

reaction

Separation of a Mixture!

Activity: On your table, you have 1 mixture and a few

supplies…find a way to separate the mixture! (15

min) Write down your procedure as you go!

Filtration • Filtration is a technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid. This type of separation involves a mixture poured through a piece of filter paper that has been folded in to a cone shape. The liquid passes through and the solid stays behind.

DistillationDistillation: a method of separating mixtures based on boiling point

Decantation: a method of separating a solid and a liquid by pouring the liquid off the top of the solid

Chromatography

Chromatography is a technique that separates a mixture (called the mobile phase) on the basis of size and the time to travel across the surface of another material (called the stationary phase).
