“Cascade Server”
Website Accessibility Initiative
The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) develops strategies, guidelines, and resources to help make
the Web accessible to people with disabilities
UNM Web Standard
Requirement
All UNM Websites are required to make reasonable effort to comply with the standards for accessibility as set forth by Section 508, an amendment to the United States Workforce Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Help With Compliance WAI web accessibility & Section 508 standards• As you create and publish content, Cascade Server is checking
for compliance and alerts content editors to any potential errors, ensuring your site is accessible to all visitors and your content is optimized for search engines.

Technical Details
• Content created via Cascade Server is automatically checked for 508 compliance (for persons with disabilities), and relevant W3C standards are adhered to
• The WCMS enforces the objective items for levels 1 and 2 compliance. This includes ALT attributes for images and summary attributes for tables. Certain initiatives are subjective, and human intervention is required
Not Appropriate For Compliance
• Web applications especially phone applications cannot be validated in the same way as say a standard desktop focused application
– Mobile Applications– Where’s My Bus
Site Maintenance
• Tools
Content AgingStale content reports are visible in chart form in the website interface
Broken links Both internal and external are checked during the edit and publish phases of content manipulation
Validate ContentPublished content is validated for XHTML, XML, and CSS compliance
Content Aging • Report represents sitecontent that has not beenupdated in last 120 days
• Duration is configurable• List interface shows each file
Broken Links
Links are checked during the submitting of content for saving or publishing
– Internal– External
Content Validation Does Cascade Server validate content?
• Published content is validated to ensure it is in compliance with XHTML XML, and CSS specifications set by the respective organization. This ensures cross-browser support for published content
• Notification is given any time invalid code (XML, XSL, HTML, etc.) is submitted. The user is required to correct the error before saving changes to an asset
Preventive Maintenance Tools
SiteCheck is a tool for managing the quality of your website by providing the following:
• Discover all broken links, spelling errors and accessibility issues.• Keep track of documents and media files on your website.• Assign responsibility for different areas of your website to different persons.• Send automatic error reports to the responsible editor.
• The service is offered under a cost recovery model based on the cost of the license. We base billing on a block model in which each block will contain 50 pages. A website with less than 50 pages would need to purchase 1 block. Larger sites will need to purchase an equivalent number of blocks to cover the size of their website.

Toward Version 2
• Truncate “building”, “office”, “suite”, and “hall”• Truncate numbers• More eye-catching design and icons
• Maybe AND / OR, instead of exact match? • Solution for misspelling?
How to meet students’ need?
• Why do they use the map search?• What type of information they are looking for?
• Embed classroom locations in our course catalog?• Cut down noise?• Add MSC (mail stop code)?
Who should be responsible?
• Data• Metadata• Update• Redesign
Special shout-out to Randy and Christine.
THANK YOU!
and time for a cocktail...
