In a strategic move to increase
the influx of rural youth
into the Construction Skills
Training Institutes, L&T has
signed a MoU with Common
Service Centers (CSC) which
are the front end delivery
points for the Department of
Electronics and Information
Technology under the Digital
India Programme.
The 1.5 lakh odd CSCs
set up thus far offer a
plethora of services like
banking, insurance, pension,
education services (digital
literacy, NDLM, financial
literacy), health services
(telemedicine, Jan Aushadhi),
railway ticketing, election
procedures, maintaining land
records, UID and passports
and electricity bill collection.
L&T LAUNCHES A SIGNIFICANT RURAL OUTREACH PROGRAMMEIT Minister presents a plaque for an agreement on skill development with L&T
In rural India, CSCs are
more than mere delivery
points; they are change
agents, promoting rural
entrepreneurship, building
rural capacities and
livelihoods. The CSCs are
operated and managed by
a village level entrepreneur
(VLE), who belongs to the
same village possessing basic
computing infrastructure
along with internet. These
VLEs play a crucial role and,
as part of the MoU, they will
play the lead role in screening
and deputing suitable
candidates from rural India
for enrolling in L&T’s 8 CSTIs
located across the country.
L&T’s CSTI team is currently
spending considerable time,
energy and financial resources
to travel to camps in remote
villages to screen suitable
candidates for CSTI and then
train them adequately.
This collaboration will enable
the VLE to assign a Unique
Number to the recommended
candidate of the same village,
who will then be tracked
and deputed to report. On
successful completion of
the training period or within
100 days, the concerned
VLE will receive an incentive
of Rs. 500 through a single-
window CSC account. This
initiative therefore has
enormous potential for L&T
as a significant rural reach
out programme.
At a function held in Patna
on the 23rd June 2016, the
IT Minister, Mr Ravi Shankar
Prasad, presented a plaque
for the Skill Development
Agreement made with L&T
which was received by Mr. V
S Ramana, GM & Head CST
and CSR. While addressing
a large gathering of 2000+
VLEs from Bihar, Mr Ravi
Shankar Prasad thanked
L&T for the collaboration
and urged the VLEs to join
the Nation Building initiative
by sending more rural
uneducated and unemployed
youth into the stream, to get
trained in the construction
sector. He appreciated
L&T for the initiative that
takes care of free training,
food, accommodation and
opportunity for employment.
Present during this
occasion, at which several
CSC programmes were
announced, were State IT
Ministers and representatives
from Central and State
Governments.
Later, Mr. Ramana presented
the CSTI film, shared
highlights of CSTI training
and the immense opportunity
available to the rural youth in
this ‘Skill India Initiative’. The
response was overwhelming

Reaching out remains the
abiding theme of the CSR arm
of L&T Construction and one
more expression of this in the
area of ‘Skill Development’
was when they joined hands
with Rehoboth (a shelter
involved in the vocational
rehabilitation of the mentally
and physically challenged) to
develop a sustainable model
of income generation for
destitute mentally / physically
challenged women.
Apart from constructing a
t ra in ing-cum-product ion
centre, the scope of the
project includes skill building
for the women, therapeutic
intervention and vocational
rehabilitation all under the
ambit of this single initiative.
ENABLING THE dIFFERENTLy ABLEd The project was conceived
to be sustainable and fetch
returns from social enterprise,
the profits from which could
be utilized to rehabilitate
the destitute women being
nursed at Rehoboth.
Although labelled ‘Mentally
and Physically Challenged’,
these women possess
extraordinary abilities and
strength. The project aims
to provide a platform for
these women to reveal their
potential, individually or
collectively as a team, and
thereby empower them to
be financially and socially
independent.
The inaugural batch of 30
women have successfully
completed training in making
Mrs. Sagaya Mary is one among the rehabilitated women
from the Home who has been training others on making
various hand-made products like jute bags, fabric bags,
flower bouquets, candles and envelopes by involving other
professional trainers. Once trained, these women folk start
making products on their own that are sold for a small profit.
The cycle continues with scheduled time line of activities
and marketing linkages. This training is also a therapeutic
intervention for the stressed women.
L&T is keenly associated with the project providing strategic
guidance, professional technical and marketing support.

made by the women are
marketed centrally by the
Rehoboth Trust and this
support is benefitting 120
mentally challenged women.
A great initiative, the project
that has been on for about six
months has already started
to make waves with orders
for their products coming in
both domestically and from
overseas. The returns are
shared among the women
involved in the making of
the products and a portion
contributed towards the
running of the home and
welfare of the inmates.

LEARNING
The Single Teacher Schools programme, L&T Construction’s flagship CSR initiative, was started in 2014 as an integrated approach to rural development aimed at improving the learning capability of children (primary and middle levels) through community learning centers. Today, as many as 3125 children in 125 hamlets in the districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu are enjoying the benefits of the programme.
expanding the scope towards holistic village development:
This programme actually prepares the ground to reach out into the areas of health, environment
and skill development. For 2016-17, an array of health interventions have been initiated to
ensure that our reach is wider and deeper especially in these 125 villages.
Comprehensive eye Care
Through this development model, L&T intends to facilitate the process of integrated
village development by targeting prioritized issues (education, health & skill
Development) which will improve the overall wellbeing of the rural community
at large. Comprehensive and continuous evaluation processes are also in place to
achieve the objectives of the programme.

The standard bearers of primary education in rural India are the
schools located across remote locales that strive hard to sow the seeds
of learning. Most of these learning centers are engaged in educating first generation learners and in spreading
the importance of education to the surrounding community. L&T, through
its vast network of project sites, has been playing a pivotal role in supporting
such institutions with a range of infrastructure and study essentials.
Here are footprints of the many small initiatives by project sites that have
resulted in big gains for the learners.
