A verb in the basic (unconjugated) form is called an infinitive (infinitivo). Infinitives in Spanish are verbs that end with –ar (hablar), -er (correr), & -ir (escribir).Infinitives in English begin with the word “to”. (hablar – to talk, correr – to run, escribir – to write)When we conjugate verbs in Spanish we drop the –ar/-er/-ir endings first.

Showing possession, ownership There is no such thing
as an apostrophe (‘s) in Spanish.
To show ownership or possession of something, we use the word de (of).
Morgan’s pencil = el lápiz de Morgan
her notebook= el cuaderno de ella
his chair = la silla de él
my desk = el escritorio de mí (accented “i” here)
your pen = el bolígrafo de ti
We can also use possessive adjectives:
mi, mis (my) tu, tus (your) su, sus (his, her,
their, your) nuestro(s),
nuestra(s) (our) my pencils = mis
lápices your pens = tus
bolígrafos our backpacks=
nuestras mochilas his books = sus
libros
19
Contractions in Spanish There are only 2 official
mandatory contractions in Spanish (which, of course, do not involve any apostrophes):
They are: a (to, at) + el (the) =
al (to the, at the) de (of, from) + el (the)
= del (of the, from the)
Sometimes “de” is used as part of an expression or phrase, and doesn’t actually translate to anything.
Examples: Yo trabajo al
restaurante Dos Chiles Grandes. I work at the
restaurant Dos Chiles Grandes.
Yo soy del estado de Tejas. I am from the state of
Texas. La silla está detrás
del escritorio. The chair is behind
the desk. 20
