Phoenix Members Qualify as National Sport Taekwondo Referees! National level sport Taekwondo competitions rely onexperienced referee judges to score the techniquesappropriately from competitors. It is tougher than it lookswith scoring a system of a single point for a punch to thebody, 2 for a kick to the body armour, 3 for a kick to theheadgear plus extra 2 points if any kicks made with aspinningaction. Judgesalsohave tounderstand thevariousillegal actions during a competition. On Saturday 12thJanuary,PhoenixTaekwondotook5ofourBlackBeltsdowntoDorset totakepart inaKyorugi (sparring) Judgescourse.

Thecoursewasaclassroomcoursefrom10am–5pmwithawrittenexaminationat the end of the day. The course was delivered and examined by BritishTaekwondo international competition referee, Master Naraine and attractedparticipantsfromalloverthesouthofEngland.Intheweekbeforethecourse,allparticipantsreceiveda60pageEnglish/Koreanbookletofthecompetitionrulestolearn in preparation. The course included all the aspects of competition judging,with everything from the dimensions of various matted competition areas,electronic protection equipment, scoring and penalties and pre-competitionequipmentchecksbeingcovered.Therewasalsoalight-heartedpracticalusingtheelectronic scoring equipment (a bit like a gaming-controller). The course wasconcludedwithawrittenexaminationwithallthePhoenixmembersscoringinthetop7participantsontheday,withallourmemberscoring88%orhigher.Phoenixsecured the top-3highestexam resultswithPhoenix instructorChris topping thetable with an amazing 98%! Congratulations go out to all our successfulparticipants; Chris, Eunmi, Dave, Matthew and Mike. All successful participantsreceivedtheirofficialcertificationaccreditingthemasnationalcompetitionjudges.

OnSaturday1st June,Phoenixwillbetakinga squadof competitors to theBluewavePoomsaeTournament.Thisisanationalleveleventwithover300competitors fromacross theUK. Thestandard will be challenging but wehave been overwhelmed by theinterest shownbyour studentswillingtotakeupthischallenge.ThecompetitionissplitintovariousageandgradecategorieswiththehighergradesofRed-Beltandabovehavingtoperformacompulsory setofPoomsae.Beginnerand intermediategradesgettheluxuryofchoice!Therewillbeindividual,pairandteamcategories. This competition is extremely popular with registrationopeningatnoononFriday25thJanuaryandbecomingfullby5p.m.Wehavemanaged to include all of our studentswhohave expressed aninterest –which involved us sitting on the registrationweb page forhoursatatimetobefirstintoregister!Shouldbeagreatexperience!
