Ideas – Locational Geography
Location: Where places are
UK
Always try to locate in relation to the rest of the world – using tools such as google Earth, compass and locational vocabulary – to the north of France etc
Children to think about somewhere that they have heard of or have been or would like to go to in the world and then go and stand where they think that place would be – developing familiarity with the shape, distance apart places are and their own spatial awareness
The World
Developing children’s locational knowledge
Drawing the continents onto a balloon, giving it a realistic 3-dimensional shape:
Can give support at different levels and use this to assess knowledge and progression over time if done at different times of the year.
Having a whole school or class display – postcards received from people in school or outside of school – similarly with newspaper stories from around the world, pinned on and linked to the source country
Inflatable Globes
If you can only get one resource for your geography teaching, make it an inflatable globe! There is so much that you can teach from it and the children will never stop learning while they interact with it. And it’s probably the best value for money that you can find!
