UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY at STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY FACILITIES - LOCATION
Located in Center for Molecular Medicine/ Biology Learning Laboratories (a.k.a. CMM/BLL)
The UG BIO Facility (BLL) contains:• Teaching Labs• BIO Learning Ctr (BLC) • Administrative Offices:
o Advising (G-04)o Registration (G-05)oCourse Admin (G-05)•Preparatory Facilities• Executive Offices
Provide support and coordinate efforts of the Departments of:
• Biochemistry and Cell Biology• Ecology and Evolution• Neurobiology and Behavior
in offering the Biology and Biochemistry majors at Stony Brook University.
UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY MISSION
BIOLOGY PROGRAM - Overview• As of 4/28/2011 there were 2,111 eligible and
registered Majors and Minors in Biology
• There are 7 different tracks of the Biology Major
General Biology Developmental Genetics Neuroscience Ecology & Evolution Environmental Biology BIO Major/BNG Minor BIO/CLS Double Major
AND a Biology Minor
• The most popular of these tracks are: General Biology (70-75%) Developmental Genetics Neuroscience
Biology (the beginning) at Stony Brook
Required courses in other areas:(Biology @ SBU builds on a foundation in math and
chemistry) Calculus (2 semesters)General Chemistry (2 semesters, with lab)Organic Chemistry (2 semesters, with lab)Physics (2 semesters, with lab)Statistics (1 semester)Introductory Biology Lecture Courses (not a sequence!)
:BIO201: Organisms to ecosystemsBIO202: Molecular & cellular biologyBIO203: Cellular and organ physiologyIntroductory Biology Laboratory Courses (a sequence!)
:BIO204 & 205: Fundamentals of scientific inquiry in
the Biological Sciences
The first couple of years of the Biology Major basically cover the PRE-MED Requirements
BIOLOGY MAJORThe Upper Division Level
Five Upper Division Biology Lectures
Two Upper Division Biology Labs
It is at the UPPER DIVISION Level the BIOLOGY TRACKS differ
Advanced Track in Developmental Genetics
• Prerequisite course from the core curriculum = • Fundamentals of Molecular & Cellular Biology (BIO202)
• Advanced lecture courses =• General Genetics (BIO320) • Animal Development (BIO325) • Either Cell Biology (BIO310), or
Cancer Biology (BIO314), or Evolution (BIO354), orMolecular Development of the Nervous System
(BIO339)• + 2 courses outside of track (can use optional courses listed
above)
• Advanced laboratory courses =• Developmental Genetics Laboratory (BIO327)
Offered in spring semesters - aim for junior year!• + 1 advanced lab outside track,
e.g. Techniques in Molecular & Cellular Biology (BIO311)
Developmental Genetics Track:(Pre-requisites and the plan of
attack) • BIO202, a prerequisite for all courses in the
Developmental Genetics track, is offered every semester.
• Animal Development (BIO325), which is offered in the fall, is a prerequisite for the laboratory course in Developmental Genetics.
• General Genetics (BIO320), which is offered in the spring should be taken either before, or concurrent with the Developmental Genetics laboratory.
• BIO202 first (& ASAP), BIO325 in the fall, BIO320 and BIO327, the Developmental Genetics Laboratory the following spring!!!!
and that’s all folks……………….
