LOADING DOCKS: What You Need to Know

April 2016

There are two types of loading docks, Standard Dockslocated at one side of the building and Cross Dockslocated on two opposite sides of the building. Loadingdocks are the arrival and departure point for largeshipments brought to or taken from a building by trucks.Tractor trailers should have ease of access to the loadingdocks with enough room to maneuver in and out of thespace. Each type of loading will determine the specificdesign of the docks and where they are located on thebuilding.

1) Standard Loading Dock: The loading dock spaceincludes a shipping and receiving dock for trucks, astaging area, and at least one office space for docksupervisors or managers. Warehouses that handlepalletized freight use a dock leveler, so items can beeasily loaded and unloaded using a forklift. When a truckbacks into such a loading dock, the bumpers on theloading dock and the bumpers on the trailer come intocontact but may leave a gap; also, the warehouse floorand the trailer deck may not be horizontally aligned. Themost common dock height is 48–52 inches. A dockleveler bridges the gap between a truck and a warehouseto safely accommodate a forklift.

2) Cross Docking: Designed for moving product inboundand then delivering outbound directly to the customerwith little or no material handling in between. Crossdocking not only reduces material handling, but alsoreduces the need to store the products in the warehouse. In most cases the products sent from the manufacturing

area to the loading dock has beenallocated for outbound deliveries. Some of the benefits of CrossDocking: Reduction in labor costs,as the products no longer requirespicking and packing in thewarehouse. Reduction in the timefrom production to the customer, which helps improve customersatisfaction. Reduction in the needfor warehouse space, as there is norequirement to store the products.

Dock Door Features:Bumpers - protect the dock from truck damage, mayalso be used as a guide by the truck driver whenbacking up.Dock leveler - a height-adjustable platform used as abridge between dock and truck, can be operated viamechanical (spring), hydraulic, or air poweredsystems.Dock lift - serves same function as a leveler butoperates similar to a scissor lift to allow for greaterheight adjustments.Dock seals - compressible foam blocks against whichthe truck presses when parked; seals are used atexterior truck bays in colder climates where this willprovide protection from the weather.Dock lock - a strong metal hook mounted to the baseof the dock which will hook to the frame or bumper of atrailer and prevents it from rolling away during loadingoperations, can be operated via manual, hydraulic, orelectrical systems; this system can replace or work inconjunction with wheel chocks.Dock light - a movable articulating light mountedinside the dock used to provide lighting inside the truckduring loading operations.Let us know how Jackson Cross Partners can help withyour warehouse requirements.
