Literary Terms2015-2016 1st Semester

An event that happens, in which an individual/person caused it to happen and eventually it happened to them. What goes around comes around.

ExamplesPickpocket Gets his pocket Picket

One stole a cell phone Got his phone stolen

A boy stole one pencil at school He got his whole pack of 12 pencils stolen

Ironic Situation/Situational Irony/Cosmic Situation

Sequential Order/Sequence/Chronological Order

The order in which events happen. The order of events.

EXAMPLE

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 A – B - C

Point-of-view the way stories, movies, plays etc… are told.

1st person uses word like I, me, my, mine

2nd person uses word like you, your, we, us

3rd person uses word like they, she, he, him

Affixes-make new word by adding on to the word (suffixes and prefixes)

• Prefixes – any thing added on to the beginning of base to give new meaning.

• Suffix – any thing added on to the ending of a base to give new meaning.

• Examples

• Do re-do un-do

• Take mis-take mis-tak-en re-take

• Locate re-locate re-locat-ing

• Use un-us-ed mis-use

• Look look-ing

• Run run-ning

• Act re-act re-act-ing

• Read re-read re-read-ing

Homophone/Homographs/Homonyms-words that have different meanings but sound the same. Sometimes they are spelled the same sometimes they are not spelled the same

• There, they’re, their

• Byrd, bird

• Dawg, dog

• Live, live

• Two, to, too

• Dear, deer

• Bear, bare

• Heir, air

• Bow, bow

• Ate, eight

• Fair, fare

• Be, bee

Ambiguity-opposite thoughts/wordExamples

• I am short, but I can do what everybody else does.

• Shaqu is big and tall, although he sleeps in a twin bed.

• The lunch is good at Red Springs, but the pizza is not good.

• The lunch is not good at Red Springs, but I eat it everyday.

• I love being at home with my mom, but I can't wait to move out.

Perception – The way a person see things

Example

• My mother see my boyfriend as no good, but I see him as good person

• I think my little sister is a smart mouth, but mother thinks she is delightful

• I think my little sister mean, but my mom thinks she is a sweetheart

Conflict – Not getting along/a struggle

Example

• My sister and I fight all the time

• I fuse all the time with my little sister

• I shot at my big brother

• My dad beat my big brother with a bat

• Boyfriend and Girlfriend argues all the time.

Implied-to say something to another person without saying it. A certain look. To say indirectly.

Example:

I seen Jack, with a girl. I ask with a grin who is that.

Central/Main Idea-the most important thought of what the paper, book or reading is about.

• Example:

• Empire-To build a strong and powerful record company.

• Hawaii 50- keep Hawaii safe from criminals. A police show.

• News-To informed on current event.

• Duck Dynasty-To build and sale duck call devices.

• Wild Man-To catch and remove wild animal from place they should not be.
