• The wet and unsanitary conditions caused a fungus.

• Infections like gangrene resulted from trench foot.

• This often led to amputation.

Rum, Rifles and Breakfast

• Rum after the fighting.• Clean rifles and eat breakfast.

• Usually an unofficial truce during breakfast.

Inspection and Chores

• Refill sandbags.• Pump out muddy water.

Smell• Rotting carcasses by the thousands.• Overflowing latrines• Dried sweat and feet• Lingering odor of poison gas• Rotting sandbags• Stagnant mud• Cigarette smoke• Cooking food
