The City would like to remind everyone that there is no on-
street parking from December 1 to March 31
Next On The Hit List?
The city tried to close our arena again but we got a reprieve
until probably next year at this time.
I just read the Rainbow District School Board‘s report on
accommodation that was mentioned in the Northern Life.
While the board has a moratorium on accommodation review
until 2014, it was told at its January board meeting that when
the moratorium is lifted, the following schools, among others,
will be under potential closure:
Levack Public School, Larchwood Public School, Chelmsford
Public School and even Chelmsford VDCS.
What‘s next? Feel free to discuss!!
Dog Park?
A reader suggested that a fenced leash-free dog park be built
so that our four-legged friends can run safely. What do you
think?
A Penny For Your Thoughts?
Now that the penny is a dead issue, why not bring your unwanted pennies to
The Beer Store in Levack. The folks there will deliver all the pennies to
―Pennies For Pediatrics‖ and ALL of the money raised this way will stay in
Sudbury! (Don‘t forget to keep at least one as a souvenir of times past!

The winner of February‘s contest was Marie Mills of Levack.
Seriously?
How reliable is transit? Recently, a reader called
ORACLE‘s office very upset at the treatment her
daughter received by both Sudbury Transit and Trans
Cab:
The reader‘s daughter (14) went to a movie in
Sudbury with friends and took Sudbury Transit from
the theatre to Chelmsford‘s St. Onge station and from
there Trans Cab home to Levack.
That‘s what was supposed to happen!
As she boarded Sudbury Transit bus, the young lady
mentioned to the driver that she would need the
Trans Cab to meet her at the St. Onge station. The
driver said that Trans Cab was not running anymore
that night. (According to the Trans Cab schedule,
there should have been one more run at 1:02AM
going to Levack/Onaping.) The bus driver refused
this young lady a transfer for the Trans Cab. The bus
driver left her (remember she is 14 years old!) at the
St. Onge station. The young lady called Trans Cab
and was told that there wouldn‘t be any more runs
that night and that the driver wouldn‘t have picked
her up anyway because she didn‘t have a transfer.
The dispatcher said that Trans Cab didn‘t pick up just
anybody—especially someone without a transfer!
The young lady called the police and THEY came
and got her and drove her home to Levack.
What is wrong with this picture? Is this the service
we pay for through our taxes?
This is not the first time horror stories like this have
happened. You have to make your views known to
our councillor (Claude Berthiaume, see his business
card on Page 2) AND the Transit Department at City
Hall (just dial 311 and ask).
Nothing’s going to change if we don’t demand it!
Knights of Columbus News
The Knights of Columbus Levack Council will
be selling Nevada tickets at
Cobi's Convenience store in Onaping.
All proceeds from these sales will be used for
Pastoral & Charitable needs
for Onaping Falls & Cartier.
What great fun my 4 year old granddaughter Gwen and I had at the movies on
Saturday. 'Madagascar 3' was so enjoyable and Gwen loved it!! Folks of Onaping and
Levack, you should check out these movies at the far end of the Onaping Community
Centre. I expected to see a large flat screen television set. Instead we saw a ‗TV as big
as my house' (direct quote from Gwen) We need to access all the great programs and
events we have before we lose them all. All free and snacks are just $1.
Thanks for a very special, delightful fun time.
Sincerely, Chris Allen (and Gwen)

Movies At A New Time!
Due to overwhelming demand, Friday night movies that used
to begin at 7PM will now begin at 6PM starting on March 8.
The Saturday matinee time of 1PM will not change. You can
bring your own camp chair, a big fluffy blanket or a monster
pillow to lean on. 5.1 surround sound and a screen that is 25
feet wide makes your viewing experience that much better. If
you want, bring your own snacks and beverages. There is
even a limited selection of snacks available for purchase at the
snack bar.
Please see Page 12 for a list of upcoming FREE movies!
Levack/Onaping Winter Carnival

Interesting!
The movie that was being shot in Levack with Ryan
Reynolds, Scott Speedman and Rosario Dawson resulted in
a new name for our arena. Reynold‘s wife Blake Lively was
not in the film—she was just here with Reynolds.

Needle In A Haystack?
An ORACLE reader was out walking his dog in the fields behind the arena. The
keys managed to jump out of his pocket and disappear into the snow. He is
offering a $25 reward for their return. Suitable punishment will be meted out to the
snow when the keys are found! Please call ORACLE (Page 6) if you find the keys
and want to claim the reward!

History Book
The Story of Onaping Falls
Robert P. Trott
Chapter 10 Going around the gentle curve that hugs the base of the hill, Frank suddenly saw a small pile of old railway ties laid across the track. By cutting the engine and pulling frantically on the brake handle he managed to slow the scooter down enough so that when they did hit the obstruction they were not injured and the scooter was not damaged. Before they could collect their wits a shot gun was poked in Harry‘s face and the small case containing the payroll snatched from his hand. Events happened so fast that Frank and Harry could only remember that there were two men with kerchiefs over their faces and describe what their backs looked like as they disappeared into the bush. Realizing that it would be futile to chase the men who by now were out of sight, Frank and Harry quickly lifted and dragged the railway ties off the track and continued to the mine to get help. At the mine site Frank Eager hurriedly recruited a search party from the yard crew, machine shop and rock house. Because the locomotive engineer and fireman were not on shift at the time, the master mechanic and a helper fired up the steam locomotive. Within minutes the posse had clambered aboard a flatcar and with enough head of steam to get moving they were on their way to the site of the robbery. During this short time period, the jitney at the Levack Station had loaded its passengers and baggage and collected the odd small freight parcels for local businesses and the mine. On board were seven passengers, two of whom were young local girls who had gone along for the ride. By carefully clutching and declutching, the driver nursed the vehicle and its two passenger cars into motion for the short run to Levack. With the locomotive and the jitney heading towards each other on a single curved blind track, the result was inevitable. At the crash site the damage to the jitney was total. The tremendous weight of the locomotive in comparison to the jitney not only demolished the car pulling the passengers but drove it back up the track. Except for bruises and scratches, no one on the mine locomotive and flatcar was hurt. In the jitney the mess of twisted metal and splintered wood was appalling. Riding in the motor car were two passengers. The man sitting next to the driver was dead and the man sitting behind him was in critical condition, in fact he died a few days later. The driver, who possibly was saved from being thrown forward out through the windscreen, because of the presence of the steering wheel, was badly injured with chest wounds and a broken leg.

OFCAN
The Onaping Falls Community Action Network held its latest meeting on February 21, 2013.
The meeting was very well attended by residents of Levack, Onaping and Dowling—about 40 people altogether.
The regular agenda of the meeting was put aside.
Councillor Claude Berthiaume (Ward 3 which covers Levack, Onaping and Dowling and part of Chelmsford) was
not in attendance at the meeting.
Scott and Mike presented an overview of what OFCAN is and what it has accomplished in the last little while.
Following that, the floor was opened to those in attendance to share their thoughts, feelings and questions regarding the possible closure of
the I. J. Coady arena in Levack.
It was noted that the group formed to save the arena has a following of over 600 members on their Facebook page.
There was lively discussion about the arena and many ideas were presented as to the next steps to take—one of which was the petition that
will be presented to City Council.
Everyone is urged to monitor the Facebook page for upcoming events and details.
