Metaphor

Direct comparison between two things that does NOT USE “like’’ or “as’’

Example 1: His room was a junk pile.

Example 2: I am a rainbow.

I am a rainbow.

• Explanation: I am a colorful person.

• Explanation: His room is a mess.

Simile

A comparison using like or as.

• Example 1: The baby's skin was like rose petals.

• Example 2: My brother was a sneaky as a rat.

The baby’s skin was like a rose.

• Explanation: The baby’s skin is smooth.

He is as sneaky as a rat.

Explanation: He is sneaky.

Alliteration

The repetition of the same sound.
