April 30, 2013

House keeping

• If you have trouble with the audio, please enter a question using the Q&A function

• There will be a question period at the end of the presentation

• Questions may be entered using the Q&A function

• A PDF of the slides will be sent to all participants

• A recording will be made available

Goal

• Raise awareness • Provide basic understanding • Identify sources of information

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

• Energy efficiency benchmarking system

• Used by over 300,000 buildings representing over 30 billion square feet

• Used internationally

• Referenced in LEED Canada EB:O&M

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

Launch of Canadian tool

July 10th 2013

Timeline

• June 24th at 9pm: web services (ABS) shut down

• June 26th: general system shut down

• July 10th: system re-opened

Data carry-over

All data will be copied to a Canadian server Sharing rights will be copied

Changes to the US program

General improvements

• Improved usability with more intuitive navigation

• Increased system speed and performance • Modernized web services • Optimized database architecture

New features

• “Add a property” and “add a meter” wizards to simplify data entry

• Easier-to-generate reports, including greater flexibility to download characteristics and metrics for buildings and/or portfolios into MS Excel

• More options for “sharing” properties with other users

• Added checks, alerts, and tips to help users ensure data accuracy

Learn more

• Webinar slides – most recent will be available April 22

• Additional materials throughout May/June www.energystar.gov/PMupgrade

Canadian adaptation

• Agreement signed October 2011

• Led by the Office of Energy Efficiency

• Updates provided in NRCan’s OEE newsletter, “Heads Up: Building Energy Efficiency”

Canadian adaptation

• Methodology used to develop the Canadian 1-100 scales is identical to US

• Both express performance on a percentile basis compared to peer group

• Canadian scales based on Canadian buildings dataset (Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use – 2009)

Canadian features

Metric units Bilingual interface Weather data based on postal code Canadian GHG emission factors Canadian source-site energy factors

Source-site factors

• Factors that recognize the true impact from the use of different energy sources by accounting for:

Losses in storage, transport and delivery

Losses in production, transmission and delivery

• National factors provide equity

What will it mean

Only offices and K-12 schools will, initially, be able to earn a score Retail and hospitals planned for Winter

2014 Medians available for all building types

Scores will change

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

Will the switch be optional? No

Will I be able to access my old score? No

Variables affecting score

Performance of Canadian buildings

Variables affecting score: parameters and coefficients U.S. (kBtu/ft2) Canada (GJ/m2)

Impact on existing ratings

Average change for offices will be a slight decrease

Impact on existing ratings

Data centers

Data center energy use must be metered as of July

Estimates will no longer be permitted

In Canada, there will not be a model for data centers at launch

If not sub-metered, include all energy use and enter area as ‘other’ space type (which cannot exceed 10% of the building’s area)

If sub-metered, the data centre energy use and floor area can be removed

Impact on EB:O&M projects

Reminder

Portfolio Manager is subject to changes and accommodations will not normally be made for these changes

Impact on EB:O&M projects

Changes to scores will affect eligibility and points that can be earned

CaGBC is evaluating the need and possible means of mitigating impacts

Considerations

How much will buildings be impacted? How many buildings will be impacted? At what stage are the projects? In midst of Performance Period?

About to start Performance Period?

Investing with the goal of seeking certification?

Preparing for the launch

Print Statement of Energy Performance for most recent data Must include 12 months of data

Last period must end no earlier than March 31, 2013

Contact CaGBC if you cannot meet this requirement
