Economic

Income - correlation between success in Olympics and GDP. Russia is an anomaly in the top 10. Many competitors cannot afford to go to the Olympics e.g. Kayakers in Uganda Infrastructure – e.g. swimmers require access to Olympic sized swimming pools GB was successful in cycling due to investment in velodromes and government funding

• Social and cultural –

• Population – China and USA very successful in the Olympics

• Populations of 1.4 bn and 311 million. Russia also successful.

• Cultural barriers

• E.g. Muslim women less likely to take part in some sports because of the requirements to cover up.

• Publicity

• Some sports are very good at promoting themselves and their sport. Once a sport gets media coverage it tends to see an increase in interest and participation.

• Discuss the economic, social, cultural and political factors that influence this.
