Definition•Many different definitions

•Active function in a group, task oriented(Asst. Manager)

•Intrinsic personality trait (born with it)

Genghis Khan was a natural born leader

who conquered most of Central

Europe and created the largest empire

in history.

Department store

managers are largely

•Promote positive ideals & changes

•Create intrinsic motivation

•Lead by example

History of Transformational

Leadership•Introduced by leadership expert and

presidential biographer James MacGregor Burns

•Later Bernard Bass introduces Bass’ Transformational Leadership Theory

Components- Intellectual Stimulation- Individualized Consideration- Inspirational Motivation- Idealized Influence Bernard M.

Bass

Intellectual Stimulation

•Challenge the status quo

•Encourage creativity among followers

•Encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn

Individualized Consideration

•Offer support and encouragement to individual followers

•Keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas

•Offer direct recognition of each followers unique contributions

Inspirational Motivation

•Have a clear vision

•Articulate vision to followers

•Help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals

This guy just looked inspired

Idealized Influence•Serves as a role

model

•Followers trust and respect the leader

•Followers emulate the leader and internalize his or her ideals

In Nazi Germany even the children emulated Adolph Hitler

Power•Referent power (most

important to a Transformational Leader)

•Believers follow because they admire or identify with the leader

•Expert power (not bad to have as well)

•Followed because you are believed to be an expert in the field.

Transformational leadership in healthcare

•Compliance can be achieved with minimal hand holding. (vitally important in a nursing shortage)

•Patient care practices become internalized as ideology instead of simply being policy

•Create independent intrinsically motivated followers willing to go above & beyond what is asked of them (higher efficacy)

•Followers of transformational leaders are often more satisfied with their work (less burnout & turn over)

Summary

•Many definitions of leadership

•Transformational leaders are the most effective (in my opinion)

•They use referent power

•Best leadership style for healthcare
