How to Lead your Round Table

We Live In a Different WorldWe Live In a Different World

192719772007

We need to be relevant to that We need to be relevant to that worldworld

• We need to be aware of what we look like on the outside

• Beer and Curry is not a focus• Fun is…• Fund raising is not a focus• Community is…• This is a long term plan. There is no

silver bullet.

You will be the Chairmen of You will be the Chairmen of Round TableRound Table

• You cannot dictate• You cannot sack people• You can inspire• You can manage• You can lead

Restricted

Kurt Lewin’s stages of changeKurt Lewin’s stages of change

• Psychologist Kurt Lewin• Early 20th Century• Status Quo is comfortable• We are all always in a state of

change• There are 3 stages.

FreezeFreeze

• Resistance of change- Frozen• Some people come ready for change• Others take a long time to let go of their

comfortable current realities

TransitionTransition

• Change is a journey• Leaders spend months on their own personal

journeys and then expect everyone else to cross the chasm in a single bound.

• Transitioning requires time• Transition may be hard for the individual• The hardest part is to start• Taking people out of their comfort zones

RefreezeRefreeze

• The end of the journey. • In our organisation there is no refreeze• We are always in slush• We need to question ourselves all the time• We are a self refreshing Organisation

Top Leadership TraitsTop Leadership Traits• Commitment• Confidence• Sense of Humour• Belief• Praise• Taking Blame• Organised• Understanding we work in grey• Not afraid of failure

That is the theory....That is the theory....• How do I put that into practise?• Question everything?• Are you doing things because they have

always been done that way?• What does your organisation look like from

the outside?• Table is made up of past chairmen,

chairmen and future chairmen• It was always better in the past

Rule Or Tradition ?Rule Or Tradition ?• Grace• Aims and Objects• Induction• Loyal Toast• Dress Code• Any Others?

Wouldn’t happen in my dayWouldn’t happen in my day

• Round Table is about change• Adopt, Adapt, Improve= Change• Source code of the organisation

“The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table,Adopt methods that have proved so sound in the past, Adapt them to the changing needs of the timesand wherever possible Improve them.”- Prince of Wales. 1927 British Industries Fair

SuggestionsSuggestions• Meet with your tablers before you

take over.• Discuss traditions• Talk about what you like and what

you don’t like• Do more of what you like and do

less of what you don’t• This should happen every year

Try ItTry It

If It doesn’t work, don’t do it againBecause it didn’t work in the past doesn’t

mean it won’t work now. When one door shuts another opensOr you can always reopen the first door,

because that is how doors work
