LET’S DISTINGUISH BETWEEN HALLOWEEN

AND DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

As you read yesterday, people often get the Day of

the Dead and Halloween confused. Let’s distinguish

between the two by categorizing which items belong to which Holiday.

1) Raise your hand to come to the SMARTBoard and place an item in its correct location.

2) Be able to explain why you categorized an item the way you did.

ALTARS 1) What types of things are placed on the altars?

2) You were asked to bring things that you would want to be placed on your altar if you were away and wanted people to remember you. What did you bring?

3) You are going to place these items on an altar and explain in writing why your altar best represents you.

4) You will perform a gallery walk and grade each other’s altar with a rubric.

Yesterday, you read a little about Dia de los Muertos and

the altars that created in honor of people’s ancestors.

These altars are one of the most important components

of the Day of the Dead celebration as they represent loved ones who are no long

with families.

If you were unable to bring items:

-Create a write up explaining what would be on your altar and why.

-Create your altar.

-Place this write up on the altar.

ALTAR SET UP 1) You have each been given a number and these numbers are also

posted around the room. This is where your altar is to be set up.

2) Get out your items or write up that you have brought to place on your altar. Gather other materials such as skeleton puppets, marigolds, food, and anything else you wish to place on your altar.

1) Separate, go to your altar, and set up. DO NOT DISTRACT OTHERS.

2) Write a paragraph explanation of what is on your altar, why it is there, how it represents you, and how it is similar to actual Latin American altars.

GALLERY WALK

1) You need a notebook or notebook paper and a pencil or pen.

2) You will travel around the room silently and take notes on each altar and its contents.

3) You must visit each altar, take a moment to appreciate the altar and read about it. Grade each other’s altar with the “Met” “Not Yet” rubric.

• When we are all finished we will come back as class and share out.
