ADORATION ADORACIÓN

Thursday / Jueves 9AM to 6PM

We wish you a Merry Christmas on this Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. Tradition tells us that the Wisemen of the East arrived in Bethlehem where they honored Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In many households through-out the world, especially in the Orthodox Christian and East-ern Rite Churches but in many different places there are multi-ple customs. Traditionally in Italy the giving of gifts is held until the Epiphany mirroring the Three Kings. In Mexico there is a

special bread “Rosca del Reyes” or “Three Kings Bread” in which a small figure of the baby Jesus is baked into the bread and the person who finds it is the “Godparent” to Jesus that year and is often asked to host a party for the child Jesus. In other countries, especially in Northern Europe, the Epiphany is celebrated with the blessing of the house and the marking of the door way with chalk the initials of the “three Kings” Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. This year it would look something like 20+C+M+B+19.

The Epiphany is a celebration of the 12th day of Christmas…but we are not finished with Christmas which will officially come to a close on the Baptism of our Lord (next week). (Continued on page 8...)

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The word 'Epiphany' comes from Greek and means 'manifestation'. Epiphany, or the 12th day of Christmas, falls on January 6 and marks the last day of the Christmas season. The Twelfth Night (Epiphany) also marks a visit to the baby Jesus by The Magi, (the three Kings, or Wise Men). Accord-ing to the Gospel of Matthew, the three kings found baby Jesus by following a star across the desert to Bethlehem. The three kings: Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, fol-lowed the star to meet the baby Jesus, and offer Him symbolic gifts of gold, frankin-cense and myrrh. Across the world, the day's festivities vary. In the Spanish speaking world Epiphany is known as Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings' Day) In Mexico, for instance, families gather to taste the Rosca de Reyes (Kings' bread) where a Jesus figurine is hidden in the bread. Whoever finds the small baby Jesus hidden inside their slice of the Rosca de Reyes throws a party on Candlemas, February 2nd. In some European and Lat-in-American countries, children leave their shoes out the night before to be filled with gifts, while others leave straw for the three Kings' horses. The Catholic dioceses in the US mark the Epiphany feast on the Sunday after January 6.

(Pastor’s Notes Continued form page 1)

How are we continuing to celebrate Christmas? Have we greeted someone today with “Merry Christmas?” I promise if you do you will receive the strangest look from the person.

Next weekend, at St. Lucy, we will be asking for your help in assisting the victims of the fires north of Sacra-mento this past year. It is a reminder to us that while the fires are no longer burning the needs of our brothers and sisters remain great. We will be taking up a second collection but I would also encourage you to take advantage of the online giving through the link we will provide here (Fire Assistance Fund: https://www.scd.org/catholic-foundation/fire-assistance-fund), on the website and in our electronic commu-nication. If you have already given, thank you for your Christian charity. I would remind you that our second collections are taken up at the same time as our first. We provide “pink envelopes” in the pews to designate the donation towards this special collection or you can simply write, “Fire” on the envelope.

Much like other disasters, the time of recovery doesn’t end when the television cameras and newspaper re-porters go to the next story. Your prayers and blessings of time, talent and treasure enrich our world as you support our work at St. Lucy and the ministry too many through out our state, country and world.

Merry Christmas and God Bless, Fr. Mark
