"De jouer en soliste à la basse de viole requiert une excellente main pour manier l'instrument tendrement et

doucement et comme l'harmonie est plus facile à comprendre en plusieurs parties simultanément, cela

ne peut pas être mieux exprimé en notes qu'en lettres. Donc, les musiciens ont inventé ce système le plus

facile à comprendre et pour apprendre: mais quand ils jouent dans des ensembles, cela est mieux exprimé en notes. La lyra viole ne doit pas être la plus grande des basses de viole, et doit être montées avec des cordes

fines pour qu'elle puisse être accordé plus haute et être jouer plus doucement".

violes de taille «normale», elles sont les choses les plus admirables ainsi fabriquées, par nos meilleurs luthiers, pour

ce genre de musique, aussi bien pour le consort et particulièrement pour 2 ou 3 lyra violes.

Elles doivent être charnues et qui parlent vivement, parce qu'en consort elles doivent souvent répondre au dessus, en

imitation et ainsi remplaçant le deuxième dessus.

Et ils peuvent aussi servir comme viole de division.

Thematic Index of music for viols   The Society's Thematic Index of Music for Viols was produced as a paper copy in six instalments between 1980 and 1992, edited by Gordon Dodd. He then handed the project to Andrew Ashbee and a seventh instalment was issued on CD-ROM in 2002. In 2004 the whole Index was issued on CD-ROM and the paper copy was discontinued. Now the Index is available on-line in .pdf format (although CD-ROM copies can still be made for those preferring one). It is intended to up-date the Index annually.

The Index is listed by composer, together with a substantial anonymous section. At present the pages are scans of the originals and are not electronically searchable. Annual lists of the up-dates for both new and revised pages (from 2004) are given in the introduction.

Initial work concentrated on English sources, which are now largely indexed, but the Society would be grateful for help in searching and indexing continental sources, both printed and in manuscript. Please contact Dr Andrew Ashbee if you are able to help in any way.
