Swann Mall Tree Removal + Protection Strategy Plan Swann Mall New Landscape + Replanting Plan
A tree removal, protection and replacement plan has been developed to address Swann Mall trees. The plan addresses trees that are in poor condition, non-viable for relocation and those affected by building construction and excavation required to address deep utility work under the Mall.
Nearly one third of the trees are being retained and protected during excavation and construction.
The Swann Mall landscape plan moves to a greater variety of regionally-appropriate plant materials to support biodiversity and limit water use. The plan includes a more natural storm surface water design to provide a more sustainable landscape.
Swann Mall is the University of Calgary’s original open space. Because of its proximity to the tower, link and block it will be redeveloped to create a balanced environment of outdoor plaza space with a more sustainable and strong place-making landscape.
The Swann Mall Landscape Plan includes clear sightlines, recognition of the pedestrian pathways from years of travel between buildings, and acknowledges our unique setting in the Alberta foothills prairie region.
Two well-loved pieces of public art, the Prairie Chicken and the Garden of Learning, are being thoughtfully relocated into the new Swann Mall landscape.
