THE naval officer foundguilty of spanking a jun-ior sailor will serve amaximum of 18 monthsin jail and be dismissedfrom the navy.

John Alan Jones hasalso been demoted from

lieutenant commander tolieutenant, effective im-mediately. Jones wassentenced yesterday, aday after a Court Martialfound him guilty of sevenindecent acts.

This included four oc-casions when he spankeda junior female sailorserving on the same ship.

The Court Martialalso found him guilty oftelling the sailor to takeoff her pants and thenpulling down her under-wear, making her lift upher top, and touchingher bottom.

It cleared Jones of twoother charges of in-decent acts.

Man killedby nephewMELBOURNE: A 24-year-old man who killedhis uncle after postingmurderous messages onFacebook has been jailedfor 21 years.

Sam Michael West-brook had been threaten-ing to kill his cousin’sboyfriend, Jack Forder,with whom he had a long-running fractious re-lationship, in messagesposted on the site, theVictorian SupremeCourt heard.

On the night of themurder in central Vic-toria he wrote on

Facebook: ‘‘Jack dies2nite. So does everyoneelse in Dodds Street whowalks outside.’’

But when he ap-proached his cousinAlana Westbrook’s homein Maryborough at 4amon May 23, 2010, after adrinking binge, she toldhim Mr Forder was nothome and called out toher father who lived inan adjacent house.

When Peter Westbrookstepped outside, his ne-phew shot him before re-loading the gun and aim-ing it at his cousin, who

narrowly escaped thebullet as she fled.

Afterwards, West-brook text messaged an-other cousin admittinghe had shot his uncle. ‘‘Iblew him away. It willbe on the news,’’ themessage said.

Justice Betty Kingsaid Westbrook and MrForder had been behav-ing like ‘‘12-year-oldschoolboys’’ all evening,by sending each otherthreatening texts.

She said the use ofsocial media in this caseled to the death of a man.

Police arrested the35-year-old after an in-cident about 10.20am(AEDT) on December 4.

Crows Nestbefore be-coming ag-gressivetoward the66-year-olddriver and

punching him in thehead, it’s been alleged.

Newton was issuedwith a field court at-tendance notice for twocounts of assault.
