For a sales representative, information gathering is an important job. You

cannot neglect information about other companies, industry trends, or client information.

In addition to traditional information sources such as newspapers, trade publications,

and TV, the most speedy information today is information from the Internet.

The Power Zaurus offers Internet access via its “ZaurusNet” feature, which can

be achieved by using its built-in modem or an external modem, PHS, or a mobile phone. A

sales department Manager A collects information on other electronics manufacturers

automatically via the Internet, and in the case of information regarding customers, by

using links available on their home pages or by utilizing search engines on the Internet.

On the Internet, he also collects economic news and social topics and stores them

on the Power Zaurus to use in conversation with his clients.

In addition to the Internet, NIFTY Serve electronic conference rooms (forums)

◆ Wednesday: Having an edge in price negotiation with customers

For a sales representative, the most important aspect is the negotiation with

customers. Great effort in collecting and utilizing information is meaningless if your

customers don’t buy your products. To that end, the “spreadsheet” feature plays an active

role.

The Power Zaurus “spreadsheet” feature is highly compatible with the Microsoft

spreadsheet application Excel 95. You can practically copy a spreadsheet created with

Excel 95 on your PC onto your Power Zaurus almost as is.

Sales Manager A has created an Excel 95 calculation formula for customer

negotiations, and when he visits customers, he takes it with him by copying it from his

1. What Exactly Can It Do and What Can’t It Do? Dynamic data link with PC dramatically enhanced

◆ Compared with features of the traditional personal day planner

Let’s see how the Power Zaurus differs from the traditional paper day planner,

and what you can do and you can’t do with it.

What are the characteristics of a paper day planner?

First of all, with a paper day planner, you can quickly write in it, using your

familiar writing tools, and writing is easy. With fixed formats and refills, you can be

certain to cover all items. Either you can draw with freehand on a blank page, or draw

neatly using a ruler.

Furthermore, you can use a marker to colorize to facilitate readability, easily

retrieve particular data with use of a bookmark, easily add information with a sticky note,

or thumb through pages to look for a piece of information.

Now, let’s see what you can do with this paper day planner that cannot be done

with the Power Zaurus.

◆ Is there anything the Power Zaurus can't do?

First, the biggest issue is that its screen size can’t be changed. With the paper

day planner, even a sheet of paper larger than the planner size can be folded and inserted

between pages, and expanded to see or write something on it as needed.

However, with the Power Zaurus, display is limited to a screen size of 4.3 inches

(320 dots x 240 dots display) maximum. This is half of the relatively small size VGA (640

dots x 480 dots) used for something like the Toshiba Libretto PC. You can see and write

on the area outside of the screen by scrolling the screen horizontally and vertically, but

the information you can see at one time is limited to that screen size amount.

For this reason, if you are to create a report directly in A4 size format, the screen

size is too small and inefficient. However, since the Power Zaurus has an enhanced

dynamic data link with the PC, you can transfer information you made with the Power

Zaurus to your PC, modify it on the PC, then return it back to the Power Zaurus.

◆ So many new features

The following is the list of features missing from the Access Zaurus and added to

the Power Zaurus, as well as enhanced features. The main features will be described on

the following pages.

Information file All the necessary information can be registered as a

single file. For example, you can see the schedule,

contacts, Internet information, and action list for an

oversea business trip at a glance.

Daily planner In addition to a schedule screen, you can see the action

list, contact entries (with actions like phone, Fax, or

e-mail to persons registered in the address book), and a

linked date with various data associated with that date

(e.g. reports, word processing, photo data, etc.) .

Address book The address book combines phone book and business card

management. Also, entry items are expanded to head shot

pasting, e-mail address, and mobile phone, etc.

Furthermore, past correspondence can be displayed by

registering contacts. Through the use of the information

file feature, you can distinguish the phone book from

business cards, like you do with the Monochrome Zaurus.

Ink word-processor A clean-copy feature has been added. When entry would

take too long through handwriting recognition, text can

be entered directly in the ink word-processor state, and at

a later time, the clean-copy feature turns the text into

character data.

Word-processor Just like word-processor software, you can create a

document with an easy to read layout (modification of

font size, color, and/or character style).

Voice note Using an earphone-microphone set sold separately, voice

recording and playback can be done.

Spreadsheet With the Excel compatible feature, you can not only

display but also perform data entry as well as chart

display.

Internet library When connected to the Internet, that screen can be saved.

Saving is possible in both automatic operation and

manual operation.

MORE software In addition to the Power Zaurus' own features, you can

also use applications made by other people using MORE.

FAX viewer You can see contents of a fax transmission received on

your screen.

Digital camera Using the digital camera card (equipped as standard for

MI-506DC, optional purchase for other models), you can

take digital photos. Photos taken will be listed in the

Photo Memory and can be used in e-mails.

Internet access You can access the Internet using the built-in FAX

modem, PHS, mobile phone, an external modem, etc.

There is also an automatic operation feature.

Portable keyboard A portable keyboard which was lacking in the previous

Zaurus generations is now available. This is convenient

for lengthy writing.

Faster built-in

FAX modem

The data transmission rate of the built-in FAX modem is

now a faster 33.3 Kbps (for FAX, however, 9.6 Kbps)

compared to the previous 14.4 Kbps.

PC card now supports

PCMCIA

Previously the IC cards used were a proprietary

Zaurus-only type. With Power Zaurus, you can use a

single PCMCIA Type-2 card widely used for laptop

computers.

Increased amount of

information can be saved

The Zaurus main memory size is now about 3.4 MB

(MI-506), and about 1.45 MB (MI-504), an increase of

about 1.5 – 3 times from before.
