AGE OF DISRUPTION TOUR—Our culture tells us that aging will change us against our will, and for the worse. Internationally acclaimed longevity expert Dr. Bill Thomas argues that this is false. Blending myth and science, live music and visuals, Dr. Bill Thomas’ Age of Disruption Tour is a modern day American Chautauqua barnstorming the country in a rock n’ roll tour bus to bring communities a new and highly disruptive understanding of aging.
Drawing on ancient wisdom and scientific breakthroughs, the Age of Disrup-tion Tour challenges audience members to reject ageist stereotypes and embrace the moments of life that offer the greatest risk, reward and possi-bility. The Tour includes an afternoon workshop to Disrupt Dementia featur-ing a new film by the director of Alive Inside and Dr. Thomas’ signature “non-fiction theatre” evening performance Aging: Life’s Most Dangerous Game. Also featured are musical guests Samite and Nate Silas Richardson.
“Aging can be re-imagined as a vivid and enlivening process that presents us with extraordinary risks, and rewards,” Dr. Thomas says. “So, how are we supposed to play this most dangerous of all games? What do winning and losing look like?”

Health Care for Seniors
We are very excited to announce that Kennebec Manor and Kings Way Care Centre have been chosen to participate in a provincial initiative to ensure the appropriate use of anti-psychotic medication in residents living with dementia. The initiative is sponsored through the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement and the New Brunswick Association of Nursing homes. There has been more research into the area of antipsychotic medication in persons with behaviours secondary to dementia. The research indicates antipsychotic medications may not be the best choice for persons with dementia who do not have
a previous psychiatric history.
We will be starting to assess residents who are on antipsychotics to ensure these medications are contrib-uting to the best quality of life. It is part of a structured plan and each resident will be evaluated. We will be starting slowly with one Neighborhood and each resident will be assessed. Families and care staff will be involved in the process. This includes additional education on medications and strategies for helping
residents who may have their medications changed.
The medical team will of course be involved. The additional Team members are Tammy Allaby, Cindi Gould,
Jane Logan, Gillian Miller and Megan O'Hara. Kennebecasis Drugs will be supporting us as well.

The service agreement is between the individual/resident family and the foot care provider. You may choose providers others than those listed here. The Eden Alternative - It Can Be Different
We have reviewed the first five Principles and this month we will explore Principle
#6. We are over half way through the Ten Principles!!
The Eden Alternative Principle #6
Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we
find meaningful is essential to human health.
What is meaningless activity you may ask? According to Collins English Dictionary, the word
"meaningless" is defined as nonsensical, senseless, inconsequential, inane, insubstantial. They
also define it as pointless, empty, useless, hollow, vain, trivial, worthless, futile, trifling,
insignificant, aimless, valueless, purposeless and nugatory. None of these words leave you with a
very good feeling. I am certain none of us would jump at the chance to participate in an activity
or event if it was described to us using any of the words listed above. So why then do we offer
"meaningless" activities to our Elders?
"Life has meaning when we have choice"
Principle #6 challenges us all to think beyond the typical approach to filling life with an endless
barrage of entertainment. We need to really learn the Elder's stories, identity their simple
pleasures and those things that bring meaning to their life. Elders should be encouraged to be-
come involved with activities that interest them; folding laundry (real laundry, not the same
basket of facecloths that then gets unfolded for the next Elder that comes along); gardening;
caring for the home's pets; arts and crafts projects; quilting; filling backpacks for the school
program; setting tables for dinner, and so on.
We all must understand that "life is the program" and life must be filled with activities that are
meaningful and purposeful. The key to finding out what is meaningful and purposeful to each
individual person is building strong relationships with one another and getting to know each
other's stories. We have to be cautious we do not rob Elders of meaningful activity because we
can do it faster or better.
So accept this challenge to be creative and to explore some fun to prevent any human spirit
corrosion!
"Life is filled with meaning when my voice and choice are heard and honoured"
We hope you can get out to see Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative
