Agenda

Westwind KPAW News, which airs Monday through Friday, covers most of Westwind’s school activities, from PTA performances to spelling bees and talent shows to various classroom events. On KPAW news, we list all of the birthdays each week and have students come to the newsroom to wave to their friends, giving every member of the school their fair share of airtime. Through the production process, 5th grade students have the opportunity to learn from a unique experience. They’re able to build confidence, learn the art of public speaking, and share their Westwind experience with peers, building a strong school community and awareness of school events.

“IN THE NEWS” SCHEDULE

For Spotlighting Students

General announcements just need to be sent the day before the announcement (a day earlier than that is best) – if you are spotlighting something in your grade level, use the schedule above.

When writing up an announcement, remember that a 5th grade student will be reading it. Make it as simple as possible.

If you want a child’s picture on the screen, take the picture and either email it or Save it to the “Shared Data” folder on the server.

If you want a child “on camera,” please email us with details. We will let you know what date will work for the studio.. Practice ahead of time with the child and show up BEFORE 7:35 with the child.

Make sure each student has permission before adding them to KPAW news. All districts are different in this area these days. Frenship now has the ability to print a list from the office for those that cannot have their picture taken..

Who is “In The News”Remember, students should show up at least 5 minutes early so we can prepare.

Dear Parents:

Your child will be helping in the KPAW newsroom next week. 5th graders will be anchors. 4th graders will be operating equipment. If possible, your child needs to be at school by 7:25. That is when we go through the script and get ready to air the news. If you would like to observe, we go “on the air” at approximately 7:35.

5th grade parents, if you would like to have a video of your child when he/she is anchor, please send a DVD (–R) to school.

Thank you for your support!

Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Jester

Camera 2-WideGood morning Westwind, and Welcome to KPAW news!I'm JavierAnd I’m

We will be your anchors for today.. (G) Today is Wednesday , November 12th , 2014,  Today is “Chicken Soup for the Soul” Day. Have you ever read one of the “Chicken Soup” books? (G) We have been in school for 56 days  We have 119 days to go in this school year.. Did you know that 56 plus 119 equals 175?

(G) Please join us for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Stand (wait for them to stand), Salute, and Pledge…(I pledge allegiance…..) (G) Join me in the Texas pledge........(5, 4, 3, 2, 1) Honor the Texas flag. I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible. (G) Now it is time for our moment of silence..... (G) Hey, it is birthday time. .A great big happy birthday goes out to… Tristan in Mrs. King’s class.

And now for our extra segment of the day.  Take it away… Camera 1 – Extra set First..Let’s practice math facts: 5 plus 6 equals …… 11 This week’s fact is 6 plus 7. Do you know what 6 plus 7 equals?  6+7=13

1. The KPAW/Technology committee is comprised of an individual from each group in our building. This includes all grade levels and special teacher groups. When the committee meets, the representatives go back to train and/or inform their group members.

2. In the past, the TV studio has been used for teacher computer training. Teachers are able sit in their own classrooms at their own computers while tuning in to KPAW news. They watch the TV studio computer on their TV as they are given instructions on what to do on their computers.

1. It is a great idea to invite a local news anchor to our school to speak to the fifth graders about the way they sit, talk, look, and read on camera.

2. The students practice the script the night before they read it on the news.

3. We also talk to all 4th and 5th graders as they rotate through the library on orientation day.

Using a camera

Camera shots:

Pan - To pivot the camera left or right

Tilt - To move the camera up or downTilt, pan, and zoom in or out at the same time to keep subject centered or to change subject shot.

Wide shot - Two or more people or a lot of scenery involved

Medium shot - approximately waist up

Close up - (narrow/tight) chest up

Extreme close up - Face only, small animal, etc. takes up entire view

Live newscasts

Try to have 2 cameras if possible. This allows for a chance to change shots. This will also keep from having to move the camera while up live.

Vary the shots. Have the anchor be close up for one shot and the next time, use extreme close up.

Taping Events at school

Start with a 10 second “still shot” before starting interviews or reports. When report is over, add another 5 seconds before pausing or stopping the recording.

To video long events and you don’t own editing equipment, try to video 5 - 8 seconds using a wide shot followed by 5 -8 seconds a medium shot. Then set up to shoot 5 - 6 seconds of several students. Always stop the camera between shots. You can also try to slowly zoom into a subject. Never move quickly.

Studio Tips

1 Poster on the Wall - tips for anchors:

• Look at the Camera• Smile• Speak clearly and slowly• Look at the co-anchor when he is

talking.to you.• Try to sit still

2 Cue the speaker which camera is “up”.

3. On the script, highlight or underline for cues.
