Katheryn OldShield-MukaiArtist

In the early years I tested if I still “had it”—a certain gift– an eye for perspective, composition, creative vision, skill with a brush, etc. Life itself was a challenge, I needed to harness what I “had” and give it voice, direction, & determine if I could connect that creativity meaningfully with others.

I was blessed. I was met with encouragement,..And opportunity, So the journey of “working artist” began. Initially I painted in a small café, invited by a friend, and observed by her customers. Only as my desire to paint larger canvases did I bring my materials home to reveal intent.

Rendered after a dreamscape that was too vivid to forget. It would take time to understand all it portended, except that I understood that LIGHT is to be reflected in fullness no matter how alien or dark the landscaping.

Acrylic on synthetic canvas bag

Painted in response to people wanting to see things they understood. These photos will reflect the nature of the material that supports—it’s soft., and there were marketing messages sanded and gessoed over, but still bleeding through the rendering—however, I was glad to have materials to paint on. Some of these bags were sold, or bartered,. Some of my favorite images I cut out , matted, and framed.

Originally concieved as a serigraphy of three pieces, that could be arranged at will, providing some change in a wall hanging, only two of the pieces worked well for stated purpose. Texture, line, and color all play their part in these two pieces.

Acrylic on canvas

Initially this piece was part of a planned 3 piece serigraph , except it didn’t play well with it’s partners, though painted at the same time from the same pallet initially. I left this piece out of a show, and one evening about jumped out of my skin, seeing a man coming out of the canvas. Over time I attempted to tease the figure out further, even saw the big dog guarding.

Held in personal collection.

Action imbued , this was difficult, exhausting to paint, This spirited horse seemed to plunge from the canvas with flying, punishing hooves from the start: An hour of painting would drench me in sweat, Transporting this piece for show, a vehicle was totaled. Repeatedly , others attempt to corral the emanating energy by placement of furnishings, but seems contented to guard entry halls. A mustang of barrier islands, or deep grass prairies of the heartland.
