The Ohio governor, James Rhodes arrives to assess the damage and announces: “the worst type of people we harbor in America, worse than the communists, we’re going to eradicate the problem.”

The angry rhetoric draws a response from the protesters inflaming the situation.

1000 students gather at the KSU commons at noon to protest escalation of the Vietnam War.

They are met by National Guard troops ordering them to disperse.

Guardsmen herd students toward a parking lot near the football field.

An exchange of rock throwing occurs.

Panic sets in as guardsmen fire into the crowd of students.

67 shots were fired at the protesters.

Most of the bullets were fired over 300 feet into the Prentice Hall parking lot.

Two of the students killed, Allison Krause and Jeff Miller, were protesters.

Two others, Sandy Scheuer and Bill Schroeder were bystanders.

Nine others were wounded. Dean Kahler remains in a wheelchair after he was shot in the back.
