The son of a printer, Giambattista

Bodoni, born on the 26th of

February, 1740 in Saluzzo,

Piedmont, Italy, was an Italian engraver,

publisher, printer and typographer of

high repute remembered for designing a

typeface which is now called Bodoni. This

typeface is considered to be In 1758,

when he was only 18, Giambattista Bodoni

was employed at the press of the Vatican

as a typesetter in the Vatican’s Propaganda

Fide printing works.

At this point in history, this

was the department or congregation of

the Holy See founded by Pope Gregory

XV with the double aim of spreading

Christianity in the areas where the

Christian message had still not arrived.

The department was also charged with

the responsibility of defending the

patrimony of faith in those places where

heresy had caused the genuineness of the

faith to be questioned. In other words,

the Propaganda Fide was basically the

congregation whose task it was to organize

all the missionary activity of the Church.

After almost 10 years working in

the Vatican’s press, the Duke of Parma

invited Bodoni to set up and run a

printing works and it was here that he

went on to produce stately quartos and

folios with impressive title pages and

luxurious margins. According to the -
