President’s Message
Greetings Friends ~~ It’s been a busy journey so far, learning the federation acronyms, learning who does what, planning
meetings, phone calls, emails, relearning who does what, and a little bit of dancing….. PLUS working 40 hours a
week, trying to get the garden in, keeping the farm fowl alive, repairing fence, transplanting apple trees, and trying
to spend time with my 4-year-old grandson, Luke. Yes, a busy, busy journey. Eventually you’ll figure out that I’m
a scatterbrain, and that’s why I can’t remember my dance moves.
A couple weeks ago, Luke was helping me do chores. I noticed I had more asparagus popping up so I
showed him how I eat it. I thought I would be the “fun” Grammy, so I sat him down on the nearby railroad tie,
and we both leaned over and started chomping down the asparagus stem. I didn’t even cut them like I usually
harvest them. We both were like little cows, moving down the row of asparagus, nibbling them down to the
woody part. Mmmm, Mmmm…now that’s fresh produce!
There’s no moral to the story. It’s just a story to give you a silly visual. I guess I could tie it to my message
like this: when people see someone having fun, they want whatever it is that person has that brings them that joy
and fun. People will set aside their bills to use that money for something more fun. They’ll go into debt to buy a
new toy (like a boat, car, motorcycle, house, big screen TV, etc.) if they see others having fun with their toys. I
once put a $600 charge on my credit card so I could take a leadership course. The lady telling me about this
course was dressed very fun yet elegant. She spoke with excitement and smiled constantly. She had met her
wonderful, handsome, intelligent husband through this course. Ahhhhhhh… my thought was, “if she
could do it, so could I.” I took several leadership courses over the next few years ‘til finally I realized I’d spent way
too much and no outcome like I had hoped, although I did learn a lot.
Back to the asparagus story. Luke wanted to do what I was doing because he saw me having fun. It didn’t
even matter how silly it was or whether there were bugs (we didn’t even look). If I make washing dishes fun, he
wants to help. If I’m laughing and being silly while doing chores, he wants to join me. As with anything in life, if we
grumble about it, no one is going to want to do what we’re doing or help with it. We’ll be perceived as never
having fun, being boring and grumpy. If we intend on spreading the joy of square dancing to others, then we need
to show “10 times more excitement”. Someday I may tell you the story of “10 times more
excitement”, but for now, imagine something extremely fun, and then multiply that fun by 100. THAT’s the
excitement we need to show when we talk about square dancing to others! We need to smile, laugh,
tell funny stories, and show excitement when we talk to our friends and family about getting into square dancing.
I’d like to challenge each one of you to start planting a seed in your friends and acquaintances beginning now.
Show some excitement about your square dance club to at least ten people this week. If we start now, by the
time lessons are here in September, we’ll have people begging to take them. They’ll want what we have that brings
us such extreme joy.
Maybe there is a moral – “Be illy…. I ’s con agious!”
