GOOD NEWS
Dr. Richard Dycus was recently named
president-elect for the Tennessee Dental Association.
Congratulations to him and his family! LIVING FOR TODAY Will Rogers, the cowboy comedian and philosopher, said, “Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today.” This is wise advice when you consider how much time in our thought life is devoted to yesterday: its disappointments, mistakes and transgressions. The apostle Paul spoke to this idea when
he wrote, “Forgetting what is be-hind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3.13-14).
FOOLS FOR CHRIST The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was cer-tainly a controversial and polarizing figure. But he was also a man of deep faith. He once said in a speech, “God as-sumed from the beginning that the wise of the world would view Christians as fools… and He has not been disappoint-ed. If I have brought any message today, it is this: Have the courage to have your wisdom regarded as stupidity… Be fools for Christ - and have the courage to suffer the con-tempt of the sophisticated world.”

I want to make you aware of an exciting opportunity to serve our community coming up this summer/fall. You may have already seen the bags we have in the foyer and lining the walls of the auditorium. Each bag has a packing list for school
supplies that we will be donating to Syca-more Elementary. Our goal is to be able to provide every child at Sycamore a "starter kit" for the upcoming school year. The bags on average will cost you around $15 to pur-chase every item. Every little bit will help! We hope you will take the opportunity to help a child in need this school year. If you don't have the capability of going and buy-ing the school supplies, but would like to donate money towards that cause, we would greatly welcome that. You can see John Nichols or myself with donations. Thanks in advance for your help and partici-pation! Matt
Galatians 1:6-10 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel, not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Paul was tenacious about the importance of the Gospel. One of the reasons Paul showed such passion and tenacity about the Gospel is because he understood that it is the good news of Jesus that saves a person, and nothing else. Simply be-ing a good person doesn’t lead to salvation.
Once Paul planted the churches in the region of Galatia, other men went behind him and started preaching to the infant churches that they must additionally follow the law of Moses. Paul knew where that road led, which is the reason he writes this letter.
Why is Galatians 1:6-10 important? What do we do with a text like this? 1. Conversations relating to the Gospel can quickly become nuanced. People can claim to be talking about the good news of Jesus, but really miss the mark. What is the Gospel? The Gospel is literally the good news of Jesus Christ. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is good news because it proves his ability to overcome the grave. There is no amount of death (or sin) that Jesus can’t overcome. Why is that good news? Men and women don’t have to live in fear, doubt, confusion, or guilt any longer. Jesus has overcome the grave! Now, there is a host of ways to apply that practically to life. 2. What you believe about how a person responds to the Gospel is VERY important. Many people claim, “Jesus is the path, but you also have to ______.” This is PRECISELY what Paul is wanting the churches in Galatia to avoid. The good news of Jesus is the way to salvation. Our response to the Gospel (surrender to God’s will) is the only path to salvation. Once we are saved, the things we do (or don’t do) are simply our attempt to express gratefulness to God and to show other people how great he is. Once we are saved, we don’t work so that we would be saved, we work because we are saved. To work in order to obtain salvation is, in Paul’s words, “Deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ.” Believe that the Gospel is good news! It’s good because Jesus has done what we can’t! God bless, John
