JOHN HERSEY HIGH SCHOOL BANDS NEWSLETTER
Another “Congrat’s” and “Thank You”
I will extend another “congratulations” and “thank you” to our graduating Seniors for four great years in our program. It was a privilege to teach you. Thank you
very much for ALL that you have contributed to our program - keep playing your instruments and enjoying music! Thank you, also, to all of our families that
contributed in some way, big or small to our program. The Awards Banquet was a strange, yet appropriate end to such a bizarre and challenging school year. I
hope that everyone enjoyed it.

In the event that Illinois opens to allow bands to congregate, rehearse and perform like Indiana and Ohio, there will be a late summer concert of the music prepared through April and May, in addition to a celebration of our Class of 2020. Stay tuned for more information as our COVID-19 world
continues to evolve.
Color Guard Auditions!
Late Summer Concert
This vital component to our marching band will hold auditions in
mid to late-July (or earlier) when the
quarantine is relaxed. We need
some serious recruitment this
year!
Smartmusic web-based app and Ultimate Drill Book 2020DO NOT RENEW YOUR SMARTMUSIC “CLASSIC” OR NEW APPLICATION for 2020-2021!
I will be purchasing smartmusic subscriptions for everyone this year as part of your band fee – it’s a bit cheaper this way. ALSO, as part of your band fee, we will be enrolling you in Ultimate Drill Book, which is an app to use with your phone. You will now use your phones to learn drill. We will NOT be purchasing lanyards for the phones this year, they will need to keep them in pockets (not tucked into their waist) AND the best news for Mr. C – he gets a notification when you leave this application on
your phone during rehearsal. **smiley face***
2021 Chicagoland Band Festival date will be Saturday, April 10

MANY CHANGES TO NEXT YEAR’S CALENDAR DUE TO LATE THANKSGIVING AND
GRADUATION/PROM ANNUAL
Page 4
I know that I speak for the entire Board when I express my deep disappointment that we could not properly celebrate the year’s band program accomplishments together with the graduating seniors. I want to personally congratulate the Graduating Seniors for their many accomplishments in the past four years. It’s been great watching you work hard, enjoy and support one another and grow exponentially. I encourage each of you to continue learning and growing – be bold in your pursuits and keep music in your hearts!
I want to thank everyone for the honor of serving you in my role as HIA President this past year. I thoroughly enjoyed supporting our program and students and am deeply humbled and appreciative of the great people and experiences that HIA and the Band Program provided.
To my fellow Board Members, HIA is deeply indebted to your heroic efforts and service to the Band Program. Your time, talent, creativity and commitment to ensuring that our students experience was as rich as it could be is deeply appreciated!
Vice President: Julie Siegel Treasurer: Eric Junkel Corresponding Secretary: Jen Schmidt Project Chairs: Jenny Stanhope & Margo Pasek Recording Secretary: Debbie Popp
Julie will be continuing as your 2020-2021 HIA President, Jen Schmidt will be continuing as Corresponding Secretary, and Jenny Stanhope will be continuing as Project Chair next year – thank you so much for your hard work in the past year and for your continued support!
Please welcome our incoming Vice President Mark Kaiser, Treasurer David Waltz, and Recording Secretary Amy Grabowski. The program is in very capable hands! Please support them and the program by continuing to stay up to date with the newsletters, email blasts and reminds and by attending the General Board Meetings, asking questions, sharing your ideas, and by volunteering. Remember the purpose of HIA is to enrich the student experience by helping the program “be all that it can be”!

Thank you to the many volunteers this past year; the program would not be the same without your efforts. A special thanks to the Committee Chairs, your commitment of time, thoughtfulness, sweat and (sometimes) tears does not go unnoticed – you are GREATLY APPRECIATED!
To the band families – thank you for sponsoring the band, supporting your students, encouraging them and celebrating their accolades. Please continue to support the program by volunteering, offering to shadow or chair a position – I promise you that you will get everything out of it that you put in, and more – and your students will learn the power of volunteerism through your efforts – no job is too small, do not be intimidated!
I’d like to thank Mr. Casagrande for his leadership, not just this year, but every year. The Hersey Band program is truly magnificent – the lessons that you and the private lesson teachers teach, the experiences and accomplishments individually and collectively you have provided will remain with our students the rest of their lives.
As I sign off, I’d like to once again congratulate our graduating seniors! Please work hard, be your best self and get outside of your comfort zone. It’s through challenging ourselves that we learn, grow and achieve fulfillment and happiness – and I wish you that above all!
Have a great summer everyone, warmest regards!

Band Camp/Summer/Fall Calendar 20-21!!
READ CAREFULLY and plan accordingly
This year’s rehearsal schedule will be identical to last year’s summer schedule. Please mark your calendars ASAP. Next Fall, the marching band will be competing in four competitions, noted below. In July/August, particularly 7/29-8/7, we will be learning 75% of what is performed throughout the Fall season. Many of the section Olympic activities will fall on August 10-11 this year. A small portion of the June rehearsal time will be spent preparing for the July 4th parade. A majority of the June rehearsal time will be spent preparing Fall season material and fundamentals. Therefore, regardless of attendance at the July 4th parade, June/July rehearsals are EXTREMELY important. Absences from Summer dates: In the event of family vacations that conflict with June rehearsals, an explanation of conflict should be directed to Mr. C from the parents as soon as possible. Any summer music camps are also excused; notify Mr. C immediately. Students should make sure that job schedules, etc. are adjusted. August band camp rehearsals are mandatory for all. Freshman are STRONGLY encouraged to not miss June rehearsals. Most of the learning of marching technique happens in June.
Please adjust calendars and avoid conflicts with the following dates, particularly in late July/August
