Jodo Mission of Hawaii 1429 Makiki St. Honolulu HI 96814 Address Service Requested
O-Toba Set Up & Temple General Cleaning Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 8:00 a.m.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
Below is the beginning of the O-Toba (the base) set up. As you can see, the O-Toba foundation has been set up little by little with the important marker posts. We must set up 560+ O-Tobas on July 9th. We welcome both men and women. This is hard work and it can be fun! We appreciate your help.
It takes a lot of people to set up the O-Tobas. To bring the hundreds of O-Tobas out to the front lawn, it takes manpower. To set up each O-Toba, it takes at least 2 persons, one to hold the wooden memorial stick and one to pound the nails to secure the wooden tablet.
We can also use your help cleaning the temple and Columbarium/ Nokotsudo to get ready for the O-Bon services so please may we ask for your kokua. Thank you!
O-Bon Service Schedule
Friday, July 21 10:00 am (Hatsubon only) 2:00 pm & 7:00 pm

Closing Service will be on Sunday, July 23 at 10:00 am, followed by Taiko performance to send our ancestors’ spirits back to the Pure Land. Cleanup will begin shortly thereafter.
O-Toba Service Appointments: If you wish to have prayers offered in front of your O-Toba, appointments will be accepted (no appointments during above service hours):
Tuesday, July 12 to Thursday July 20: 8:00 am to 9:15 am
Fri/Sat July 21-22: 8:00 am to 9:15 am; 11:00 am to 1:15 pm 3:00 pm to 6:15 pm
Sunday, July 23: 8:00 am to 9:15 am
Offering of Rice: During O-Bon Services it is customary to offer a bag of rice. However, monetary donations in lieu of rice are acceptable. “Rice” envelopes are available in the office. Thank you for your understanding and support.
Sr. YBA O-Bon Flower Sale: Please help the Sr. YBA by purchasing a beautiful potted chrysanthemum ($2.00 each). NO phone orders will be taken. Thank you for your support.
Friday, July 21: 9:00 am to 7:30 pm Saturday, July 22: 9:00 am until supply runs out
Offerings at your O-Toba: The space allowed for each O-Toba is approximately 6 inches width and 7 inches in depth. Space is so precious! See photo at right. In 2014 someone was quite creative! Many family members visit the O-Tobas and bring offerings. Some are very organized and stack their offerings neatly in layers. It takes coordination among the various family members. Most people will offer foods that the deceased liked, i.e. fruits, mochi, pastries, candies, somen for long generation life, juice, soda.
Cucumber and eggplant: Some people will have a cucumber and eggplant on wooden sticks telling our ancestors to quickly come back to this world via the
cucumber (horse) and the eggplant (cow) to slowly return to the Pure Land and see you again next year.
The most important thing about ordering an O-Toba is to make sure you visit your O-Toba. If you are ill and cannot visit your O-Toba, please make sure you let your relatives know so maybe they will make an effort to visit your O-Toba.

Sewing Circle Does Good Deeds Doris Soma handles the Sewing Circle every second and fourth Saturday of each month at 8:00 am to 11:00 am in Ikoi Hall. She has a small group of ladies who come on these Saturdays. The temple receives a lot of fabric materials from donors who are cleaning their homes and want to discard the fabrics. From time to time, the ladies decide what they should make with the fabrics. Some fabrics are just small pieces, some are large and not always the same type of fabric. With some of the larger fabrics, they made lap blankets and donated about 20 of them to Maluhia Nursing Facility near Lanakila Health Center. The people at Maluhia Nursing Facility were so appreciative of these donated hand-made lap blankets. Mrs. Soma says these lap blankets were of good quality sewing. This made all the ladies feel good that they made some people happy. The Sewing Circle ladies only meet twice a month for three hours. They sometimes only have time to cut the material they need and then take them home to sew, donating their time and sometimes at their own ex-pense if they need something else to complete the item. During Bon Dance and the
Bazaar, all their profits are given to the temple. ARIGATO Sewing Circle.
Any volunteers who would like to assist the Sewing Circle may leave a message for Doris at the temple office.

Translating Japanese Headstones on Kalaupapa
Unknown to many Japanese families, whose family members acquired leprosy, now known as Hansen’s Disease, were shipped to Kalaupapa and never heard from again, Rev. Narashiba was contacted by Ka’ohulani McGuire of the National Park Service to assist in translating many gravestones in the Japanese Cemetery at Kalaupapa. Photo at left is Rev. Narashiba at Kalaupapa. Rev. Narashiba spent two days in April 2016 deciphering the Japanese characters on the gravestone. Some were easy to translate but others were very hard to
translate. Sometimes Ka’ohulani and her crew would use some powder or something to cover the gravestone and the characters would just jump up or they sometimes would cover the grave-stone with paper and scratch on the paper so a better impression of the Japanese characters could be seen. The gravestones were probably made by another Japanese patient so they were sometimes very hard to read. This project was part of the Historic Hawaii Foundation’s preservation goal to fully document the gravestones and translate them into English. Ms. McGuire has been working to locate families of the deceased buried in Kalaupapa. This project is one of many, many projects the Historic Hawaii Foundation is involved in and Rev. Narashiba was able to participate and was recently recognized for his efforts. CONGRATULATIONS REV. NARASHIBA!
In preparation for Bon Dance:
The Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai is again looking for manpower for Bon Dance. Most of the ladies of the Fujinkai are in their 70s, 80s and 90s and when the sun goes down, many go home. We could use your help on the day of the Bon Dance, Friday and
Saturday, August 18 and 19 in the mornings and early afternoon for cutting vegetables for yaki soba, stuffing sushi rice into inari cones and packing them for sale, assist with maki sushi as well as oshizushi, help is also needed for lifting heavy 36 cup rice pots or washing dishes. Assembling variety packs is
not as simple as you may think, some creativity can be use-ful, especially for oshizushi or pressed sushi. In the eve-nings, help is needed to sell the products made or to help serve turkey jook, yaki soba or gyoza. Whatever time you can spare, please call Sally Hayashi at the temple at 949-3995 or leave a message and she will call you back.
Sr. YBA could use your help with skewering the delicious BQ meat! It takes a lot of people to skewer BQ sticks. So if you have some time, please contact the Jodo Mission office and leave your name and contact infor-mation that you are willing to help! They can use some dish washers dur-ing the evenings also!
B o n D a n c e What do you think of Bon Dance? This is a time when families and friends get together to remember their ancestors, dance to the music of the Taiko drums and eat delicious foods!

Father’s Day at Jodo Mission
Father’s Day is a day we devote to our Fathers, Dads or Grandpas, whether they are living or passed. It’s a day we say thank you for being my Dad or for being my Grandpa and for looking out for me, for playing with me or whatever.
Sunday School students (Declan, Jax and Sophie) had a bag of goodies for all the fathers and grandfathers who attended Sunday Service on June 18, 2017. Photo at right shows Jax Guris giving a bag of goodies to Teruto
Soma and also giving him a hug.
Declan Guris read a beautiful Father’s Day poem he wrote about the things he does with his Dad and wished his Dad a Happy Father’s Day!
Stuart Nago, ukulele instructor, put together a musical treat for all the fathers and grandfathers who attended. While the koto players were set-ting up, he took the time to explain some things about his own father who passed away three years ago. He ad libbed further about his trip to Sendai
and visited with Rev. Hiroyoshi Oeda and wife Mari (he will later be our guest speaker to show videos of his trip, possibly Sunday,
July 16).
Sophie Narashiba played the koto with her Sensei Darin Miyashiro looking on. She played Mari Tsuki Vol 1 by herself and played Mari Tsuki Vol. 2 with Miyashiro Sensei. Stuart Nago sang

2017 O-BON AND BON DANCE SCHEDULE OF JODO SHU TEMPLES
Hints at the Graveyard: Many people visit their ancestors at the graveyards at O-Bon time. Sometimes they have many graves to visit. If you go to the grave and there are 2 flower containers and you just happen to have enough flowers for one container, which should you fill with flowers? It has been suggested that you place the flowers in the left flower holder and leave the right flower holder face down.
