1. Always lock the doors and close the

windows when you go out, even ifyou'll only be out for a short time.

2. All external doors should have 3

locking points. Mortice locks will addconsiderable strength to your door – ifyou are not sure how to fit them seeJLG or your local locksmiths.

3. Window locks can help to stop

people getting in, especially in older windows and windows without double glazing.

4. Use deadlocks if you have them -

they make it harder for thieves to get out again.

5. If you are thinking of PVC or metal

framed doors/windows, make sure they come with good built in locks and a fitted chain, as these can be expensive to add afterwards.

6. Patio doors should have special

locks fitted to the top and bottom –ask JLG or your local locksmith for advice.

7. Don't leave spare keys outside or in

a garage or shed if you do use adedicated and secure key box properlyfitted. JLG supply and install these.

8. Keep garden sheds, side gates and

garages locked with good qualitypadlocks and hasps and think aboutusing a JLG battery-operated alarm.

9. Keep car and garage keys out of

sight in the house.

10. Don't leave window and door keys

in their locks.

11. Always draw your curtains at

night and make sure valuable itemscannot be easily seen from outside.

12. If you walk your dog, try not to go

at the same time every day vary your routine.

13. Use timers for lights and radios if

you will be out of the house overnight.They create the impression thatsomeone is at home. It is notrecommended to use TVs for thispurpose.

14. Visible burglar alarms, good

lighting and security lighting can be deterrents.

15. Think about connecting a smoke

detector to your intruder system asthis can call the fire brigade.

16. A connection to call the police,

fire brigade, key holding company or aneighbour should be considered.

17. Particularly ensure that recessed

areas and doorways have goodsecurity lighting.

18. Make sure that lights don't

disturb your neighbours and thatalarms turn off after 15 minutes. Thisis now a regulation and you can belanded with a fine.

19. Your security lighting can be used

in conjunction with a JLG CCTVsystem and this can be viewed on a PCor on your mobile phone.

20. Walls and solid fencing around

your house may let a thief break inwithout being seen. Trees and shrubscan also be hiding places.

21. Chain-link fencing or trellises

with prickly shrubs can be a bettercompromise.

PRICKLY SHRUBS

Listed below are a few shrubs you might consider planting.

A) PYRACANTHA Large evergreen shrubs suitable for wall training or hedge. White flowers. May-June followed by red, orange or yellow berries in Autumn. Thorny branches. Grows 2-4" tall.

B) HIPPOPHAE RHAMNOIDES Sea Buckthorn grows in any soil and is wind resistant with silver foliage and excellent thorns. This large shrub provides superb cover. Plant in groups of 3 to obtain berries.

C) BERBERIS OTTAWENSIS SUPERBA Use as a hedge or an individual shrub. Deciduous barbed plant with beautiful purple foliage. Yellow flowers in Spring. Reaches 1.5-1.8m tall, allow two plants per metre.

D) BERBERIS JULIANA Prickly evergreen shrub with shiny dark leaves. Yellow flowers in Spring. Grows 1.2-1.8m tall.

E) CRATAEGUS MONOGYNA Common Hawthorn. Forms an impenetrable thorny hedge. Fast growing, with fragrant white flowers. Red haws in Autumn. Prune to required height.

F) ILEX Holly. Evergreen shrubs for hedging or individual shrub. Green or variegated available. Plant in sun or shade. Females produce berries when males present.

G) CLIMBING & RAMBLING ROSES Useful to give added protection to walls and fences. Wide selection. Heights vary from 2.7.

H) ROSA BLANC DOUBLE DE COUBERT - WHITE

Fragrant Old Fashioned Rose - densely prickly for hedges or individual shrubs up

to 2m high.

23. Make sure that garden tools or

ladders that could be used to force entry into your home are not left lying around and that ladders are padlocked and chained up.

24. Fit a ‘spy hole' so that you can see

who is at the door. Also have a door chain so that you can open the door a little way to talk to visitors.

25. Mark your belongings with a

property-marking product.

26. Neighbourhood Watch and other

‘watch' schemes are excellent ways for communities to fight burglary.
