The Essential Jesus as

Revealed in the Gospel of Mark

The Essential Jesus as

Revealed in the Gospel of Mark

Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

- An incredible promise (v. 1) - A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8) - An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Mark 9:1 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

An incredible promise (v. 1)

Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

And he was transfigured before them.

metamorpheo metamorphosis

Mark 9:3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.

Matthew 17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Philippians 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death -- even death on a cross!

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Mark 9:4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Mark 9:5-6 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Mark 9:7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

The Shekniah glory of God!

“to dwell” … Therefore, the Shekinah glory referred to God’s glory manifested

wherever he was present!

Mark 9:7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

Exodus 40:34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Mark 9:8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

A stunning fulfillment (vv. 2-8)

For a brief moment, the three had seen something no other human being on

earth had ever seen:

The God-Man, Jesus Christ, in all of his glory . . . a foretaste of what was

coming on the Day Jesus returns to this earth at His Second Coming!

Mark 9:9-10 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Mark 9:9-13 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

1. Yet again Jesus tells them to keep quiet about what they had seen.

2. The disciples were doing their best to understand.

What does this rising from the dead mean? And what about Elijah?

Doesn’t he need to come before Messiah?

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Mark 9:12-13 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Luke 1:17 And he (John the Baptist) will go before him (Messiah) in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.

(angel Gabriel to John’s father, Zechariah)

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)

1. What does this rising from the dead mean? 2. And what about Elijah? Doesn’t he need to

come before the Messiah?

Just as God’s enemies had killed John …

so they would one day do the same with him, God’s Messiah. But he would

not remain dead, but would arise!

An insightful dialogue (vv. 9-13)
