2. Public Ministry: Increasing in Popularity & Opposition

Matthew 4:23-25 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of

the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over

Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and

he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the

Jordan followed him.

• Teaching, Preaching, Healing, Huge Crowds… Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 7:28-29 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed

at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers

of the law.

Taught Parables…

Performed Supernatural miracles: Healing the blind, crippled, lepers, demoniac’s, feeding multitudes, still the storm, walk on water, raise the dead…

At the Transfiguration He revealed His glory…

Transfiguration

Matthew 17:2-6 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes

became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with

Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one

for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them,

and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to

him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

Loved by many, yet hated and despised by the Jewish leaders

John 8:58-59 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59 At this, they

picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

• Claimed to be God: Blasphemy - Guilty, Execution by Crucifixion

Matthew 26:63-68 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?“

Condemned for blasphemy

• Events surrounding the crucifixion… •9am-3pm… •Words spoken from the cross… • Sun goes black… •Veil torn… Earthquake… • Tombs opened… •Centurion believed…

Isaiah 53:4-6 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was buried, three days later…

HE AROSE FROM THE DEAD!

John 11:25-26 25

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?“

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?

John 3:3 3 …Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

Romans 10:9-10 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
