What is Service Learning?

• Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community.

• Online Wikipedia Encyclopedia. 3, April 2008. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_learning

Examples of Service Learning

• Anything you volunteer yourself to do is considered service learning. Below are a few examples of service learning acts.

• Picking up trash along the highway• Car washes for organizations such as

the American Cancer Society• Relay for Life (American Cancer

Society)• Helping people in your church

Swampfest• Swampfest is a festival held in downtown

Waycross, Georgia. It is held the first weekend in April, and begins Friday night and does not end until Saturday night.

• Vendors from all over the United States come to Swampfest and sell items such as purses, antiques, art portraits, and even hot dogs.

• There is also a hot dog eating contest, a frog jumping contest, and various cheerleading squads perform during Swampfest.

Swampfest Continued

• A local band is usually scheduled to perform on Friday night, and the Swingin’ Medallions are usually scheduled to perform on Saturday night.

• Swampfest is going on its third year now and it has been a success each year.

• Swampfest is a joyous time for the Waycross community and I encourage everyone to attend atleast once.

Relay For life• Relay for life is a fundraising event for the

American Cancer Society.• It lasts for 12 hours (7:00 P.M. on Friday evening-

7:00 A.M. on Saturday morning), and begins with an opening ceremony and a survivors lap.

• Later in the night, there is a ceremony representing hope and celebrating the cures for Cancer.

• At the end of Relay for Life, there is a closing ceremony, which includes one last lap that everyone walks.

Relay for Life Con’t• Relay for Life is held in many other

countries.• It is also the world’s largest

fundraising walk.• Relay for Life is an amazing

experience, and I encourage everyone to attend at least once.

Why I chose Relay for Life• I chose to participate in Relay for Life because

my aunt Jane is a survivor of Ovarian Cancer.• Also, my aunt Jane’s son, David, is now

suffering from Cancer. The Cancer has spread throughout his body, and he is now on bed rest. David is in his thirties, and I still have a hard time believing that he has Cancer.

• I wanted to participate in Relay for life in Honor of my aunt Jane and cousin David. I love them both, and I treasure each moment I now get to spend with them both.
