Follow Up Information
• 1944, internees were given $25.00 and transportation
• What do you think was the response to the Japanese Americans coming home?
• Many communities did not welcome them; even posted signs warning them to stay away
• The government provided trailer camps, until the Japanese could reestablish themselves
• Estelle and Arthur returned to CA, lived in a trailer camp, and worked in fish canneries. 2 years later they returned to a “normal life.”
• Arthur passed away in 1957, Estelle in 1990.
Follow Up Information• 1970s/1980s Japanese American community pushed
to "obtain an apology and compensation from the United States" (Niiya 292).
• 1976, President Ford issues a “termination” of order 9066
• 1990, President Bush issued an official apology and $20,000 per internee
