SO,WEBEGINAGAIN!HereweareatthebeginningofanotherNewYear.Ifyouhaveadaily bible reading schedule, I am sure you are reading inGenesis. So, I thought I would start my articles for 2018 withsome thoughts on the creation and howwe can apply some ofGod’s principles for creation in our own lives. First, the worldwas created byGod’s spoken word!Whatever God needed tomake this beautiful world, he spoke it into existence. God stillspeakstoustoday.Whateverweneedforourlife,Godgivesistous through our study of scripture, our prayer life, and ourworship. Will you make the effort to listen to him better thisyear? Secondly, we see God’s name recorded throughout thecreation.Accordingtomyconcordance,God’snameismentioned32 times in the first chapter of Genesis alone. Just as he wassupreme in the creation, he should be supreme in our life too. There isgreatgainwhenwe live in “thenameof theLord”.WearetogivethanksinthenameoftheLord(Eph.5:20),wearetodoallinthenameoftheLord(Col.3:17),andasachurchweareto assemble in the name of the Lord (1 Co.5:4). Lastly, we seeGod’spower inthecreation.God’spowerinourlivesisthekeytoourendurance.Paulwrote,MaytheGodofhopefillyouwithalljoyandpeace inbelieving, so thatbythepoweroftheHolySpirityou may abound in hope (Ro.15:13).Without hope, there is noendurance. In 2018, may we be a church that relies on God’sword.MaywebeapeoplethatholdtoHisnameandmaywebeachurchthatshowsHispower!

Happy New Year! Yes, it’s the first bulletin article of 2018. And with the new month our Bible classes and sermons take on a different subject. The sermons in January will focus on the response of faith, and particularly what our response actively does. This will be a great series to interact with your kids concerning what it means to become a Christian, and to invite others you know of who might be interested in hearing the Biblical answer to the question, “What must I do to be saved?” In our Bible classes we’ll look at the lives of King Saul and King David. This first week, in considering King Saul and his disobedience and rejection, gives us the opportunity to reflect on some great and important lessons that are especially appropriate as we begin a new year.

Impatience can undermine obedience. Keep obeying God’s Word, even when it is difficult.

“To obey is better.” (1 Sam. 15:22-23; 13:13-14)

Bible Class Join us for Bible Class this Sunday @ 9:00. Our study for the new quarter… Benefits of Belief, A Heart Like His & Faith Family & Discipleship. The study will be taken from 1 Cor. 11-15, 1 & 2 Samuel & others. Our lesson this week will be from 1 Samuel 13:1-21… Bad Decisions & Consequences… More on this in class this Sunday morning!

Consider the following from 1 Samuel 13:13-14:

“You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command.”

W E Ki ds Donni Cook Children’s Educat ion

Coordinator WE Kids (oh, and parents), I am so excited to officially begin my work as the new Children’s Minister at West Erwin! So, what does that mean for you?! Well, it means that I will carry on the great work of Marla Cannefax and see to it that you have great teachers for each class and that your teachers have the materials they need to teach you. I will plan special events and activities for you throughout the year that allow you and your friends fun times together (like VBS and Kids’ Night Out events). But most importantly, I will work with the church leaders and ministers, your parents and teachers to make sure you are learning from God’s Word every time you come to church – building in you a strong foundation of the Word of God. So, if you know of someone that would be great at helping you and others grow up to be a strong and faithful WE Kid, grounded in the Word, tell them to email me at donnicook@gmail.com and let me know if they want to help in the WE Children’s Program – I am sure we can use them! See you in Bible Class, Miss Donni

Thanks Words do not adequately express the appreciation we have for all of the acts of kindness shown to us after the loss of Mom. The food, the visits, the cards, the plant and all the words of love toward Mom. She loved her Lord and her church family. May the Lord bless you all in the new year. Barbara Caskey and the family of Louise Caskey

To our West Erwin family, Thank you for the wonderful food, for your hugs and caring words. It gave us comfort and joy in our sadness. Thank you for the beautiful plant. West Erwin Christians have and always will be a part of our lives. Mom loved each of you. Thank you for loving her. May God bless each of you. Thank you again. Love, Dudley and Jeanie Brookshire and the Louise Caskey family

Dear Church Family, Words can’t express how much I appreciate the lovely poinsettia. All the cards for my birthday and Christmas cheered my heart. I miss you all so much. My love to all, Winona Shankle

Two stonecutters were asked what they were doing. The first said, “I’m cutting this stone into blocks.” The second replied, “I’m on a team that’s building a cathedral.” Christ is the chosen stone, but we are His chosen people. Peter says that, “We, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (I Peter 2:5). Like the second stonecutter, we are all part of the West Erwin team/family. We each must take an active part to continually build up our spiritual house. This new year, 2018, will offer doors of opportunity for work and service for everyone. And, as long as we continue to build on the chief cornerstone (Jesus), not only will we stand, but we will thrive.
